"0254: system volume checksum bad"

My T500 interrupted booting with this error message: "0254 System Volume checksum bad." What would that mean, other than a general hint my laptop might be on its last legs? I haven't found this code online.

Your HDD might be corrupt or is going bad. Back up all your data now as you might have to get a new HDD soon. Regardless, good time to do a fresh OS install.
