Do any firmware or software upgrades exist?

I think just for OEM drives purchased at IBM (see IBM Website), not for the Retail drives. But if anyone knows where to get the latest Firmware for Hitachi drives I would be interested, too.

Use the IBM support site for your particular ThinkPad and then look under the hard drives area. Latterly the Hitachi 60Gb drives are just fine (I have one), but if you have an early one, you must upgrade the firmware, otherwise the drive will crash (I have one of those, also - since replaced under warranty). And before you ask "How do I tell", find the firmware files and run the appropriate file - that will tell you. ... JD Hurst

How old are these Hitachi 7K60 HDD firmware to be a problem?
How did the firmware cause the HDD to crash, just out of curiosity?
I just had my 6 mth old Hitachi 7K60 died on me, and on the HDD it said "manufactured on Nov-2004". Many thanks for your advise!
