Cap replacement options? ThinkPad TrackPoint Wireless Keyboard

#1 Post by PeekPoke » Wed Oct 28, 2020 8:16 pm

I have ordered from Lenovo but not yet received my ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II (slow shipment from HK to US). But already I'm looking to buy other styles of TrackPoint cap, to see which one works best for me.

The keyboard comes with the soft dome cap; I'd like to try the soft rim style.

Lenovo.com does not sell anything but soft dome replacement.

While I find plenty of cap replacements on eBay and Etsy, I'm not positive if their physical size/shape is compatible with the keyboard.

I think I need the "low profile" after reading old threads.

  • Can someone confirm that low profile is compatible with the wireless keyboard?
  • Anyone knows of sellers selling compatible caps other than soft dome?

For reference:
  • Seller Saoto has a matrix of cap styles showing compatible ThinkPad laptops/machines but not wireless keyboards.

Hello PeekPoke! Am I reading it correctly that you joined 10 years but this is your first post? %) On the subject unfortunately I don't have this keyboard around so can't advise.. I guess once you get your hands on your new keyboard the question will be answered immediately.. BTW how long have you been waiting for your delivery? Is any kind of tracking working for you? I guess I should count myself lucky.. all TaoBao bundles I ordered via superbuy have landed at my door in the UK. The longest wait was about 40 days. I was using EUB services for postage btw.

My friend, I'll come out with the truth. I am a time traveler, and I've been traveling into the future, one decade at a time.

In 1990, IBM discovered my Tempomachina and withheld it from me. They managed to reverse-engineer the time machine and manufactured a facsimile, then coerced me to travel into the future using the code-named "TimePad" machine, to monitor my travels and my mission, and ensure my safe return.

The mission: acquire technological advances and intellectual properties from the future, and bring back to the present IBM, to advance its technological prowess and propel its strategy for world domination.

Alas, I have painfully learned that 2020 wasn't the best year to land. The deteriorating planet, the virus, the President... And my TimePad broke, now having burned-out parts whose replacement I learned are not available anywhere today. Present day IBM not only disavowed my mission, I think they laughed behind the telephone.

Fortunately, I learned that I could rig parts only found in the newly released ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard 2 for repairing the TimePad.

Now, Sir, you have been informed. If Blue Suits knock on your door, you know why.

Ah good heaven, I'm so relived. I feared John Titor was upon us once again chasing that IBN5100. G'luck with your repairs, mate!

Thanks for the info. I have not been waiting that long, ordered on Oct 23. UPS tracking shows that it's awaiting customs clearance since Oct 27 ("The package is at the clearing agency awaiting final release."). I suppose there's no point to have any expectation of arrival timeframe these days. When/if it comes, it comes.

Update: For anyone curious, below is the UPS tracking info, from Hong Kong to the US. It took 10 days from order to my doorstep.

Times are local to the listed locations.

Oct 23 1:21 PM - Lenovo.com order placed
Oct 27 8:00 PM - Label Created - Hong Kong
Oct 27 10:31 PM - Shipped - Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong
Oct 27 - Package is at the clearing agency awaiting final release
Oct 31 6:10 AM - Osaka, Japan
Oct 30 11:29 PM - Anchorage, AK, US (traveled back in time!)
Nov 01 1:17 PM - Louisville, KY, US
Nov 01 5:46 PM - Oakland, CA, US
Nov 02 6:49 AM - Sunnyvale, CA, US
Nov 02 12:03 PM - Reached final destination !
