IBM/GemPlus PCMCIA SmartCard Reader. now what?

#1 Post by Ground Loop » Tue Jul 26, 2005 9:15 pm

I have an IBM SmartCard Reader, Part #10L7340, with an IBM GemPlus-GemSAFE smart card (#10L7341). I bought it to see if I can use the security features for WinXP login or certificate storage.

I can insert the card reader into the T43. The GemPlus reader shows up in the Device Manager:

Cool. now what? I can't seem to find any Windows feature that would use the smartcard. Ideally, I'd like to use it as a second factor with the fingerprint login, so I can remove/reinsert the card to lock down the machine.

Has anyone used one of these? Did you have to add software or enable some WinXP setting to make use of it?

I can't find much information online, and I get the impression these are generally used in corporate central-certificate-server environments. I'd like to use it on a solo laptop. Ideas?
