Difference between 'stand by' and 'hibernate'

can any1 explain to me (in detail) what is the diference between sleep, stand by and hibernate. cant find any of this info on the net nor in bo+uilt-in help. which shoul i use if want to conserve battery and maintain connection to the net or network?

I thought this woulda been in the FAQ, have you checked that yet?

Well, anyways, suspend shuts everything but the RAM off so you computer is still partially on, just not completely and when you resume, you start using your computer where you left off.

Hibernate is like suspend except that everything in RAM is dumped to the hard drive and the computer shuts off totally so nothing is running what so ever and when you turn the computer back on, the file on the hard drive is restored to the RAM and you are able to start working where you left off.
