Is there anyway to easily re-attach it? I seem to be incapable.

Hot [censored]! I got it re-attached.

I suspected the whole key, little legs and all could come apart, but thanks to javanaut, I had those suspicions confirmed. I applied a touch more pressure to the mechnism, and popped it clean off the face of the key. which allowed me enough wiggle room, and visual clarity to get everything back together. and the key seems to be fine.

Now, if only I had the right kind of dvd drive, I might have a laptop that works....
