I can't decide... base config on both is about $1000, specs on the T43 are a little better of course, and it comes with an optical drive. The X40 looks hot though.
I'm worried the X40 is too small for frequent use. Comments??
T43 vs X40
i have had my t43 for two weeks now. a couple of things:
1. besides having a great laptop i thought it would be cool that i could game on it and easily bring it to a friends house. i would still rather game on a desktop.
2. i can get 3.5hrs on it with lowest birghtness and cpu undervolted and turned down (wifi on though, which is a big thing for me).
3. its nice, 5.1 pounds doesnt feel too bad (but i havent tried it in my backpack at school yet)
4. glad i have the optical bay because i found out my cd emulation software was old and causing problems.
5. since my desktop and laptop arent too far apart, id rather just use my thinkpad for "on the go" (in that sense i think i should have gotten an x series thinkpad instead)
im happy with my t43.

I actually got my T43 as a desktop replacement. It's now my primary computer and my desktop has been relegated to a network attached fileserver that only gets turned on maybe once a week for backups.
It spends most its time in the Dock II while at home, which has two USB external enclosures attached (large HDD & 16x DVD-RW). I'm very pleased with this setup and hope to get a larger LCD soon (Dell 2405FPW hopefully).
The two major selling points for me were screen size & optical drive. I travel quit freqently and have actually needed the DVD drive on most trips, but YMMV.
The higher screen resolution was a must. I do a lot of writing and work in Excel, and neither are fun when your constantly scrolling up & down because you can't fit everything on the screen. I need to see at least a full page & maybe part of the previous one.
The touchpad is also nice to have. When I don't have the bluetooth or external mouse, using the trackpoint for more than 30min or so really does a number on the joints in my finger(s) and its nice to have the trackpad to fall back on.
But if you can live with the smaller screen & no optical drive, then I'd say get the X41.
