IBM Director

#1 Post by Yecker » Mon Aug 15, 2005 6:48 am

Do I need IBM Director. It seems to be causing my T41 some problems. I can't delete it, however. Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. I have never used it myself. In one particular client, the server vendor's consultant used my T41 with my permission to download a server file and used IBM Director. It seemed to cause problems, and I did my best to uninstall it, but I can no longer find it. In any event, I won't use it again. ... JD Hurst

There is IBM Presentation Director, and IBM Download Director. Which is being discussed here?

I haven't used Presentation Director (I believe it's for multiple displays).

Download Director works in conjunction with ThinkVantage Software Installer for downloads (also for other IBM file downloads). It uses Java. I like it because if I lose my connection (which isn't unusual with a cellular connection), I can restart the connection without needing to start the download from the beginning again.

Ugh.. Download Director is that annoying checkbox that is selected by default from all IBM web page downloads.

Remember to uncheck it if you want to use your browser's native downloader, into the normal place, with the normal recovery features. I don't need megabytes of Java for something as simple as a download.

Again, which Director are you asking about? Spell out the complete name.

If I'm not mistaken, the download director agent is not a program installed on your laptop. Rather it uses Java (which is installed) to 'improve' the download results. Personally, I think it works well. Others, such as Ground Loop think it is just a resource hog.

You can uncheck the box as Ground Loop mentions above, or you could uninstall Java. I don't believe Java is necessary, but without it, certain web features may not be functional. If you decide to uninstall Java, and later want it back, you can go to Java's website and download it again (for free). Sun Java website

I started using Download Director because I had to repeatedly try to download a file and nothing would happen, it would just sit there!
