Does IBM Software Installer install all drivers?

Just wondering if Software Installer installs all drivers and updated needed for machine or just IBM concerned. Because I have problem with ATI's Powerplay (it just don't want to store preferences i make there and brings them to defaults every time I reboot the machine). However, ATI FireGL3200's driver is still the same as it was shipped and Software Installer doesnt seem to upgrade it. Should I download newer version manually?

Try uninstalling the ATI video driver, reboot, then run Software Installer to install the latest driver. Hopefully, that will cure your problem.

I tried what you suggested but it didn't work. Although I uninstalled driver, restarted computer and ran Software Installer it did not detect that driver is missing. Looks like SI doesn't check all drivers. So I did manual upgrade.

But still, the problem persists. I'm unable to make Powerplay save my settings. It just goes default when changing power profile or rebooting.

Did you follow the procedures exactly below? In particular did you use the Add or Remove Programs applet in Control Panel to remove the driver?

Copied from the ATI video driver update readme file.

Note: Uninstall the ATI display driver before installing new drivers.
See uninstallation instructions section below.

1. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract the video drivers to the hard disk drive.
Driver package is extracted into C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE
to install the video driver. Click OK to start the installation process. If you extracted
the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
5. When the Welcome window appears, click Next.
6. At the Software Licence Agreement screen, if you agree, click Yes.
7. At the Select Components screen, click Express.
8. At the Setup Complete screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
9. Click Finish, then reboot the system.

Uninstallation instructions
---------------------------
1. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. Select ATI - Software Uninstall Utility then click Change/Remove button.
5. Click OK to continue to remove ATI related software.
6. Click Yes to restart Windows.

Yes, I checked the uninstallation algorithm and did as it says. The newly installed driver works perfectly, just Powerplay seem to be the problem. Guess it's not up to driver then... Don't know what else could affect those settings in Powerplay.

One other possibility is that Windows is not unloading the registry on shut down. As a result, the next time it boots, it uses an older backup copy that is slightly different than the current copy. Look for a file called userenv.log in the C:\WINDOWS\Debug\UserMode\ directory. You can open it in Notepad to view it. Delete the file, shutdown and reboot, and look for it again. It will display, if there were any problems during shutdown.

You can download and install a program from Microsoft called UPHClean that may work to solve your problem. Troubleshooting profile unload issues

You can also go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, to look for problems. On any errors, click on the error, and while online, click on the link to get more information on the error.

This is what I get in userenv.log after reboot. UPHClean don't show any problem during shutdown and there is no log in Event Viewer which would indicate this problem.

The entry you are getting in the userenv.log indicates that Windows is not shutting down cleanly. UPHClean is a service that you can see by going to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. It runs all the time AFAIK. If you don't want it to run, you can stop and disable the service in Services. UPHClean shouldn't show any error messages itself. These would be shown in userenv.log.

Are you still having the problem with Powerplay?

If so, the following are only ideas of mine for troubleshooting your problem.

I am assuming you have just one user set up on your laptop. If you have more than one, you may need to set your Powerplay settings when logged on as Administrator.

I'm not sure how far you want to go pursuing this issue. I would think the next step would be to uninstall software until you find the one preventing the clean shutdown of Windows. I would tend to suspect antivirus software, software firewalls, or anything else that runs all the time. If you only boot up, change your Powerplay settings, then reboot, does the problem still appear?

Powerplay is still an issue.

Thanks for the advice. First I will try to restore the computer to the point when I set it up when purchased. And then try installing back the software while checking which is causing problems.

Not really. I don't know what else to try to fix it. If running on batteries and need full performance I just manually set PowerPlay to full. It stays like this until next restart.

Please tell me if you find the solution.

I found this on ATI's website. I'm not sure if you have already tried this.

RADEON 9600 Series - CRT-FPD-enabled settings are not retained after restart

The information in this article applies to the following configurations:

* RADEON 9600 Series
* CATALYST 3.9 Display Drivers
* Windows XP

Upon rebooting a system after selecting custom dual display systems, the desired settings will be lost.

To correct this issue, download and install CATALYST 3.10 Display Drivers or higher.

Well.. hum... I thought it was working but, in fact, I have still the same problem as before. Any other ideas what we should do ? I thought it was maybe an IBM component that changed the settings after every boot, but I searched through all IBM components and I found nothing about it... :?

It finally works properly for me. It was a problem due to my ibm power manager profile. I changed to a default profile and it works okay for powerplay, my settings are saved.
