I searched through the forum and can't find an real answer to this: I noticed that I have both Java 1.4.2. and 1.5 installed on my my 2005 T43. There are two separate Java control pannels, and when I check in the Add/Remove Programs window, I find that the 1.4.2 is specifically "IBM Java Control Pannel 1.4.2". When I get support infor I'm told about the "Python" platform. www.python.org I think.
I see that IBM's Java is unique to IBM machines and "is for updating IBM PCD products only." Huh?

What is Python--is it this IBM Java? Is this likley to cause conflicts 1.5 v 1.4.2? And what will I loose if I get rid of it?
Thanks for any ideas.

On any ThinkPad I have used, there is only the IBM Java. But if you install the upgraded Sun version, it does not uninstall the old version first so that you are left with two versions. That happened to me a while back before I realized that you have to uninstall Sun Java manually before installing a new version. ... JD Hurst
My T42 also has two versions of Java installed - one IBM Java, and one just called Java. I didn't remove either one, as I didn't want to mess anything up. I did not knowingly install the second copy of Java. I suspect some program or browser install did this. I have Netscape 7.2 and Firefox 1.0.4 installed.

On my T43 I do have a change/remove thing for IBM Java, but when you try to uninstall it, it first prompts a dialog that says are you sure you want to remove it and all its components blah blah, then if you click okay it just says that the application has finished maintaining java, but doesn't uninstall itself.
On my machine I have 2 concurrent versions of java operating, IBM Java 1.4.2 and I also separately installed Sun Java 1.5 to get firefox support.
At least until I find out how vital IBM Java is and how it can be removed.
