New version of Rescue and Restore won't install

This is a problem with a T42 and the ThinkPad Software Updater. I've been trying to upgrade Rescue and Restore, as prompted by the updater, but the upgrade fails, and the installer rolls me back to the previous version. The readme file points to a page that says I should uninstall the old version of Rescue and Recovery first, but when I try to do that from Add/Remove Programs, I get a "fatal error" message and the thing doesn't uninstall. (I've got IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore 2.0 installed.)

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and is there a known solution to it? I haven't seen anything in the forums about it, so it's possible it's an odd quirk in my system.

Thanks for any help.

OK - found the solution:

Download and install the 400 MB update to version 2 of Rescue and Recovery here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57264

After this, the installation of the new version 3 finally works. What a timewaster....

I'm having trouble with this. I tried to upgrade Rescue and Recovery 3.0 on top of Rescue and Recovery 2.0. The docs on the IBM website say this is allowable.

Software Installer says its installed, but no program shortcuts are created and the old ones are gone.

So, in order to upgrade to 3.0, I have to get the full 2.0 package?

Can I just uninstall 2.0 and install 3.0?

Can't see why it wouldn't work. Why not try?

Whenever I try tto install RnR (2 or 3), I get the following error: "Error 25014. There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager. Return code: 6." When I firsst tried to upgrae to 3, it removed 2 and produced the same error before finishing the installation. I was unable to revert because the RnR 2 installer released in May gives the same result. I have a T43.

RnR installation (upgrade)

I would very much appreciate it if someone could provide an idiot's guide to upgrading to RnR3. Perhaps someone with Lenovo/IBM connections could do this for us?

I have RnR 2.04.0182 installed. I have seen several posts saying that some people have had trouble upgrading. Is the best way to upgrade by using Software Installer or downloading the program from Lenovo at

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... Q2QAK.html

The former shows a file size of 235 MB, but it is 485 MB to download & install from Lenovo. Why is this? I can see the advantage of having a copy locally, to avoid having to download it again after a big crash.

RnR always worries me, because it seems I have to sometimes delete all my backups before I can make a new one. In the meantime I would be stuffed if something goes wrong.
Am I doing something wrong?
Does RnR 3 address this?

Thanks

I just upgraded to from version 1 to version 3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. I downloaded version 3 from the page you posted above.

2. I uninstalled version 1 using Add or Remove programs in Windows
Control Panel.

3. I installed version 3.

4. You will be given the option to install the Client Security Software. I chose not to. I believe the inclusion of the Client Security Software in the version you download manually, accounts for the larger file size.

5. I chose not to set any passwords. Currently I have only the Windows logon password set. I do not have the power-on password, supervisor password, or hard disk password set.

6. The software will still install the ATMEL security chip driver - which wasn't installed previously.

7. If you have only a Windows logon password as I did, the Rescue and Recovery program will ask you for your Windows logon password when you launch the Rescue and Recovery program. Otherwise you see only the normal Windows logon password prompt when you boot up.

8. Each time you boot up, you will see Client and Security loading box display briefly. I only see this when I boot up as Administrator (I have 3 user accounts set up on my ThinkPad).

9. As far as I can tell, the installation went perfectly. I can launch the Rescue and Recovery software just fine. I have not tried making any backups with it yet.

10. I hope this helps.

I had the same problem, and tried many things to fix it, until I remembered that I had password protected the Rescue and Recovery area at Boot time (access from the Access IBM button at boot time, and look for the Password Protect option and blank this.

...And it all seemed to work very well until I got a blue screen STOP message whilst creating recovery disks. One dead harddisk! A replacement is on its way from IBM. Fortunately I have a full R&R backup from last night on a USB harddisk, so nothing lost! (The T43 is only 3 days old).
