Question to T43P/T42P/R50P gamers! (driver-related)

#1 Post by tehsoul » Sat Sep 17, 2005 6:38 am

hi!

i'd like some gamers input on a particular matter.

last year i owned an r50p, and now a t43p... i'm not a heavy duty gamer, but i play my share of wolfenstein: enemy territory. when using my r50p, it froze on me sometimes, but didn't really look into it.
now with my t43p, it does exactly the same thing. only sometimes, though.

after a night of trial and error, i found that both in rtcw and wolfenstein enemy territory, after about a minute ingame, the laptop freezes completely, but ONLY on online servers that have punkbuster enabled!

i'm not sure about other games with punkbuster having this issues, as i haven't tried (and dont own other games anyway). but i'd like to know if any of you noticed this yet? seeing that it happens on the r50p as well as the t43p leads me to believe that it's a problem with the videocard drivers (firegl)...

anyone?

well does it just freeze for a second, or does it hang completely?

with mine, the only thing i can do is a hard reboot :(

What drivers are you using?

IBM's?

You might want to try Ati's Catalyst 5.8's. They are unified drivers, meaning they will install on laptops as well as desktops.

You will need to install the latest version of .NET to get the CCC (Catalyst Control Center) to work properly.

Also do you play wirelessly? The wireless zero config utiliy windows uses will cause some hangs with online games. You can disable this with the help of some online tools.
IBM T43p
2.13Ghz | 15" Flexview UXGA | 2GB DDR2 | 60GB 7200 rpm | Ati FireGL V3200 | DVD Multidrive

i tried IBM's and the one from windows update...

hmm, i'll try those catalyst drivers later. though, are they good for firegl cards?

Even for the p series, the cards are no good for games, I don't think driver will help much.

Also, try updating punkbuster by hand. I know that I've had crashes (not as severe as yours however) when pb would try to update automatically.

Go to the 'pb' folder in your ET directory and run the file 'pbweb' this will update your punkbuster files out of game.

It's worth a shot.
