Any way to "reset" Software Installer

After a batch of Software Installer updates I found that I couldn't browse my home network anymore and after failing to fix it, I resorted to using XP's System Restore utility to rollback the Thinkpad to a time when the network browsing was working. That fixed the problem, but now it seems that I've messed up Software Installer.

When it tries to update some drivers to newer versions it tells me that it can't find certain files in the driver directory. I've verified that that particular driver directory is there, but the file referred to is indeed missing.

Is there any way of "re-setting" Software Installer so it redownloads anything which is required?

Have you tried deleting (or moving) the .log files in the DRIVERS sub-directory?

Cheers,

I 'think' that Software Installer looks for .XML files. If you were to delete the .XML file for the driver or software that you are trying to reinstall, I 'think' the next time you run Software Installer while online, it will download and install the driver or software you are looking for.

Software Installer downloads the software packages initially in one of the following folders and their subfolders.
C:\DRIVERS
C:\IBMTOOLS
C:\SWTOOLS

Using the search feature of Windows, search for the .XML file that contains text that references the driver or software you are looking for. You can view the .XML files with Internet Explorer and find the name of the driver or software within it.

That said, it is probably easier to go to the driver and software site, download the driver or software package, and execute the downloaded file (just double-click on it). This will only put the files that are inside the file you just downloaded into one of the 3 directories above. Now when you run Software Installer again it should see the available update and give you the choice to install it. (Alternatively you get navigate to the directory where the files were placed and execute the Setup.exe file).

You can get to the download driver and software page by pressing your blue Access IBM key, choose Get Help & Support > Download & update > Device drivers & software downloads. Follow the on screen prompts to get to the above page.
