Having searched the forum i could not find any direct comparison between the 2 recent versions of R&R.
So, anyone who experienced both is welcome to share their advantages/disadvantages.

This is mostly due to the fact i'm planning a fresh install of XP soon...

GomJabbar,
After reading your post i must admit i'm a little concern regarding the Client Security Solution which installs partially, no matter what you choose during the installation process.
As someone who's been experiencing the usage of R&R 3 - how are the extra processes affects system load (CPU usage, memory)?
More important - i believe i've read somewhere that the CSS allocates some kind of protected partition that might cause problems when trying to remove it.
Bottom line - do R&R 3 add any new features or improve existing ones that should cause me to prefer it over R&R 2?

Well I'm not someone to perform alot of benchmarks or boot timing, so I can't say for sure that it hasn't slowed the system a little, but subjectively I haven't noticed any real difference regarding: "how are the extra processes affects system load (CPU usage, memory)?"

When you run R&R 3, you are given the choice to password protect your backup and/or encrypt your backup using Client Security Software. I have not made any backups with it yet, but these options are not greyed out, so maybe they still work even though I chose not to install the Client Securitly Software complete package. See below info copied from R&R 3 User's Guide:

Note: Password-protecting a backup is different than encrypting a backup. You can password-protect a backup on a ThinkCentre™, ThinkPad™, or computers produced by other manufacturers. Encrypting a backup, however, requires the embedded security chip, which is only available on select ThinkPad and ThinkCentre computers.

I think that R&R 3 is a worthwhile upgrade. But I am also leery of installing and using the Client and Security Software. I don't want to have something password protected or encrypted where the possibility exists that I may have to replace the system board or the laptop - rendering my backups useless. I believe that the way I have it set up I should not run into this problem, as I am not password protecting or encrypting my backups.

The reason I have not made a backup with R&R 3 yet is that I just recently made a backup using Stomp Backup MyPC. Actually having R&R on my laptop is redundant, but I am curious to try it to see how it works. I am not home now where I have media to backup on so my testing will have to wait.

I think the main reason to upgrade is what ashleys wrote in the link I provided above.

I installed R+R 3 on my R51 - 1836 Q4U last week as a download from IBM/LENOVA. The download automatically wrote to the hard drive with a partition labeled "R" of approximately 10 GB. IBM technician said to get Partition Magic to remove it.

If anyone has removed the R partition without using Partition Magic and without problems please let me know how.

Apart from being free, which is not inconsequential, is there any advantange in having R+R instead of some other backup program like Acronis TrueImage?

yes, it is the only software I know which works together with a fully encrypted harddisk and Client Security Software.

Pete, hello.

I have R&R 3 on my G-41 and with a DOS floppy, I looked at the partitions and I have no "R" extra partition. Just the C:\ and the hidden one.

Not too sure as this is the first time I have backed up and reimaged my laptop with R&R3.

So far I have not been impressed. I have installed it three times and Client Security Solution continues to install when I selectively stated not to. It also continues to pop up on startup asking to setup the software.

OK, decisions, decisions...
Having given it a lot of thought, i'm a little concerned regarding the extra processes R&R 3 force me to run.
At the moment, i'm leaning toward a 3rd party backup software.
However, the most important feature for me is whether the backups are trustables...
If anyone recovered a R&R 3 image - please share your comments...
For some reason i feel like R&R 3 is not as trustable as i would like it to be comparing to 3rd party software (but that's just a feeling, that's why i'm asking for other people wisdom)
