R&R 3 - All that and a bag of chips

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Thu Oct 06, 2005 6:40 am

I just booted up into the Rescue and Recovery workspace last night. This was a few days after I installed ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery version 3. I did this mainly to verify that I had not hosed this partition with the install of the above.

While poking around in there a little bit, I clicked on System Information. There is more information there than you can imagine. Pages and pages of it. Much more than what I have seen with PC-Doctor, Windows System Information, or anywhere else. 8)

Another interesting point. It was using the Opera browser (I do have Opera installed on my T42, but I wouldn't think that install would apply here)! Also, although the scrolling feature of the TrackPoint did not work, I found that if I click on the blue center button the pointer changes, then the direction you move the TrackPoint is the direction the page moves. If you click the center button again the pointer reverts back and 2-button TrackPoint operation applies.

DKB, me again.
You wrote...

This is well explained in some docs. I have been using this from day one but it is nice to spread the word. Thanks.

Heh I also played with ThinkVantage R&R v3 yesterday after having installed it on an X41T and X40. I agree System Information has a lot of info, but I didn't particularly notice any more info than the System Information that was in the previous IBM R&R v2 (or earlier)...

I also notice a different experience with the X40 vs. X41T (using the same version of R&R 3). The workspace loads much faster on the X40, whereas on the X41T it first flashes a dialog box saying something like "Waiting for services to load...". I chalk it up to the different hardware (X41T has the digitizer screen, fingerprint reader, newer components, etc).

What's more disconcerting though, booting into the R&R 3 workspace on my X41T fails half the time (no problem on the X40)! Usually the first time I try to boot into the workspace (by pressing Access IBM key on POST), it would give some keyboard error code and tell me to press F1 to go into normal BIOS. But after I reboot and try it again, then it works.

BTW the middle button behavior is similar to what's found with Logitech's mouse driver, I found that interesting. I didn't try to connect to the Internet from the workspace though, so didn't know about Opera (thanks for the info).

BTW did you guys all upgrade to v6 of Client Security Solution (which is bundled with R&R 3) or stayed with v5.4?
