Anyone experienced cracked LCD bezel?

#1 Post by tbu3 » Wed Oct 12, 2005 6:59 am

I'm just curious if anyone had experienced the LCD bezel cracking on their TPs, especially around the hinges? I once had two Compaq Presarios both of which developed cracks in the bezels after a few months. The cracks were caused by the opening and closing of the screen and partly because of the warm humid climate in my country which weakens the plastic making it succeptible to cracks.

I've had my 600 for nearly 3 years, and according to what I've read on the particular model I have, it dates back to around 1998, so it's been around the block a few times.

I have no cracking issues, but then TPs generally are more stoutly constructed - more metal than plastic for superstructure. I've also noticed that in spite of its age, the hinges feel and work rock-solid.

I'd wager you'd also find this true of most Thinkpads - what model TP do you have/are looking to buy?

After 6 months my old Toshiba's screen was coming lose, and after about a year my sister's Compaq was having major problems staying open. When my dad replaced his T22 earlier this year after about 3 years the screen was nice and tight and there didn't seem to be any cracking.

I have an R51. Its a relief to know that TP's screens stand the test of time. I did notice how sturdy the plastic case and metal hinges are. This is my first TP and I love it. I was just concerned as I use it everyday traveling to and from work and opening and closing the lid tens of times everyday. Here in my country, the cost of repairs is too much for average folks like me to handle. So I'm just being careful with my TP not to suffer the same fate as my Compaq's, which, by the way is permanently working as a desktop with an external monitor connected.

Of all the ThinkPads I have had (dating back to 1994 or thereabouts), one had to physically damage the machine to damage the bezel. ... JD Hurst
