Seagate 7200.1 vs Hitachi 7k100

#1 Post by RonS » Wed Oct 19, 2005 11:09 am

I want to upgrade my 7K60 hard drive, and it looks like these two drives are in competition for the top performance spot.

But I can't find a single review -- anywhere -- that compares these drives side by side. Does anyone know where I can find a review that includes both of these drives?

Couple of the reviews I read put the hitachi slightly ahead in terms of raw read/write speeds. However, not significantly enough to justify the added cost. I love Hitachi drives. But not their prices. I have about 4 or 5 hitachi drives and 3 or 4 seagate drives. For the price - seagate is a good buy.

I have Seagate 7200.1 as the primary drive in my T42p. While I can't compare it directly to 7K60, I can say for sure that Seagate is extremely quite and definitely faster than the drive I had in T42p before (also Hitachi, 5400 rpm, 60GB)

Hope this helps,
-- Andrey

uh, the added cost? i don't understand. the hitach is cheaper than the seagate. the 100 gig hitach is $200, the 100 gig seagate is $290

Seagate Momentus 7200.1 is 5 year warranty, which is significantly more than Hitachi's 3-yr warranty.

From my experience, my notebook HDD's typically start to die on me around end of 3rd year, maybe it's being carried around everyday communting...

In my mind, after 5 yrs, the Seagate HDD would still be good for backups... protection for your investment...

Just ordered 7k100 100gb a few minutes ago from zipzoomfly for $212. They have free Fedex 2 day shipping to boot. I think that's a great price from a decent online vendor.

30% seems high. I didn't read the full article, but I did see they used HDTune. HDTune is pretty much a synthetic benchmark, those type do not usually accurately reflect real world performance.

We'll be comparing the 7K60, 7K100, and a multitude of others in our roundup. We'll see then :D

I can't say how the 7K100 compares to the Seagate, but I can attest to it's speedy performance.

Thanks for taking the time to write the great review at laptoplogic.

We should be seeing mobile harddrive benchmarks from StorageReview as well. I've seen numbers posted in their forums.
Compared to an average current generation SATA drive, these top-of-the-line 2.5" harddrives are still slow dogs.
