Thinkpad 701C upgrade?

Hi all-- I got the link for your forums from this webpage I located on google...

So... I am interested in upgrading my 701C... same model as the one on the site..

Currently mine has 24mb ram, so first off I'd like to know if it is even possible to find so dimms anymore.

Also, any ideas on if I could network this with another pc through the parallel ports to get the data off?

My HD is 512 MB, so finding a suitable storage solution will also be a priority.

Any ideas or advice is welcome!

This is a great little unit, which booted right up after 2 years of sitting in a desk.

Oh, one more thing, perhaps someone knows where I could get a used battery for this, since neither of the 2 I have hold a charge...

Welcome to the forum! Hope you find your answers here.

ThinkPad specific hardware should be posted in the appropriate forum. For the 701C, that would be the ThinkPad Legacy Hardware forum. Note however that double-posting is not allowed. Probably a moderator will move this post to the ThinkPad Legacy Hardware forum later.

Sorry I don't have any answers to your questions, as I am not personally familiar with the 701C.

If you're using Windows, you should be able to use a parallel-to-parallel cable (sometimes called a LapLink cable) and use Direct Cable Connection to share files.

If you're using DOS, INTERLNK or LapLink would be the software to use. If those aren't handy, a serial cable and terminal software would do the job, just much more slowly.

You can get a network card pretty cheaply too.

If I'm not mistaken you need a crossover cable. There is a difference between a straight parallel cable and a crossover parallel cable. The crossover cable crosses over the transmit and receive wires in the cable. The same thing holds true for serial cables.

There is a difference between a printer cable that has a DB-25 connector on one end and a Centronics on the other and a parallel cable that is designed for connecting two computers. There is no crossover cable for parallel.

Very much unlike serial, where a crossover is necessary for connecting two computers.

I forgot to mention the LapLink cable, specifically designed for connecting two computers and has both serial and parallel connectors on both ends. Handy gizmo for those of us who like to keep dinosarus running.

Sorry, that is not the case. Once I bought a parallel port A-B switchbox to hook up a web cam and a printer to one port on the PC. The first parallel cable I bought to tie the switchbox to the PC would not work as it was a crossover cable (both the switchbox and PC had DB-25 connectors). I had to buy a straight parallel cable with DB-25 connectors on both ends. I believe they called it a Zip drive cable.

Blow me down. I'd never heard of such a thing. Then again, I've never worked with a parallel switch box or a printer with a DB-25 connector.

Thanks for all the good info about networking, etc!

Before I get into that though I have a Q about the site LeoBob sent. I called them and to be honest with you I was a little disappointed.

First, the guy I talked to told me that they didn't have the so-dimm for my machine. This while I was online looking at what I thought was the correct part. I was in checkout!

When I asked him to explain further, he had no technical ability whatsoever. He said the computer told him they didnt carry that model, and so they don't, simple as that.

My 701 C butterfly has the following Type number on the bottom:
Type:2630 - 5TU

Now, I know that thinkpad models can be confusing... but mine looks, feels, and acts just like this one here...

says that he upgraded to 40mb.

I know that mine has 8mb embedded ram, because with the 16mb dimm it posts 24mb.

So I am going to assume that I have the same 701C 486DX4/75

I never spoke with anyone at Kahlon, I simply ordered the memory (for my 365X) right off their site. They have a money-back guarantee if the memory they recommend doesn't work... I just went ahead and gave it a try (and the memory is working fine).

I'm just guessing, but I suspect the rep told you what he did, simply because he had no idea what he was talking about... ??

I ordered 32mb for my 701 through kahlon, when it was like $18 shipped.
Got it within a week
It works on both of my 701c/cs and running Debian as a router server w/o any problems...
