Check Disk issue?
Check Disk issue?
I haven't run Check Disk in maybe a couple of months. I decided to run it just to make sure everything was on the up-and-up.
I opened My Computer, right-clicked on the C: drive, chose Properties > Tools > Check Now..., and I ticked off both boxes for: Automatically fix file system errors, and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. I chose Start, and got the message about scheduling for next time computer is started. OK. I rebooted and left the laptop for awhile.
When I came back to the laptop sometime later, the Welcome screen, screen saver was on. I chose to log into the Administrator profile (I have 3 profiles). As the Administrator user was logging in, there was an error message, something about Pro.dll (or some simular filename) failed to start. Next Norton AV gave an error message and said I had to reboot. Before rebooting I ran Check Disk from Windows without ticking the 2 boxes mentioned above. No errors showed up.
I rebooted, and had no problem logging in to Administrator. I shutdown Kerio firewall and disabled Norton Auto Protect for 5 hours. I ran check disk again as I did the first time (which requires a reboot).
This time I watched as Check Disk finished, and no errors showed up. I logged into Administrator again, and again got the error message with Pro.dll. In addition Kerio showed program trying to connect to the internet which said something like "Tool for planar replacement". I also got a message that the Security Chip was disabled, and I needed to reenable it in the BIOS. I tried to start Norton, but nothing happened. I tried to go to a command window (command prompt), but the window kept closing. I tried opening Task Manager (ctrl, alt, del), but it wouldn't open. I also got a Windows message about Dr. Watson. So I went to Start and rebooted.
The laptop booted up just fine into Administrator. No errors. I tried to look for the .dmp file of Dr. Watson, but there wasn't any. The Security Chip reenabled itself on boot up (I have the minimum CSS required for R and R v.3). So far laptop is working OK, but I am thinking now of extending the warranty, as my original warranty expires in Feb. (after 1 year).
Anyone else ever see anything like this?

OK, I ran sfc /scannow, and no errors showed up. I also ran PC-Doctor for Windows. I did the System Test script and the Motherboard Test script, and no errors showed up. I'm almost afraid to try Check Disk again.
I'm wondering if running Check Disk on boot-up has some compatibility problem with Rescue and Recovery 3, or the Client Security Software (or security chip). I know I never had a problem with Check Disk before I upgraded to Rescue and Recovery 3, although I have done other upgrades as well since I last ran Check Disk (including upgrading the BIOS).

GomJabbar,
Some time ago, [2+ yrs] I experienced something similar on my desk top...
When I attempted to run check disk...[Short function, (Auto fix file system errors - - top box only)]...restart...NO Check disk would run...
I tracked this to a Zone Alarm update...[This involved more than one reformat & reinstall, ZA being the only varible] & I consider this POSITIVE ID...
I would therefore, be suspect of your firewall software/ & or updates.
I have applied recent BIOS update...[3.19]...my check disk is functioning fine..
Edit; I do not use Rescue/Recovery...

From my experience running sys file chk it does not actually show any errors it just fixes them, it will however, prompt for the windows CD for certain OEM versions of windows. Cruzlite is exactly right, I had that same promblem with the freeware version and my toshiba. Pretty sure you don't use it but "system restore" it works for me as a troubleshooting tool. Symantec web may have something in the FAQ's. Good luck.
There should be a file in the root directory (probably hidden) called Bootex.log. The file has entries for just what chkdsk did when it "fixed errors on the disk".
Looking at this file may tell you whether chkdsk did something to "Pro.dll"

No such file on my T42 with XP Pro. I did tell the Search function to: Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders.dsvochak wrote:There should be a file in the root directory (probably hidden) called Bootex.log. The only file that looks like it could be it, is called bootlog.txt. The problem is that that file is empty, and it's date is 12/04/2004.
I only have one file with 'boot' as part of the name that has a date of 11/04/2005, and it is bootstat.dat. This file is listed as a Nero ShowTime file, and when I open it in Wordpad, there are just a couple of strange characters in it, no text.

That tip came from a note I had that I got off some MS site. Don't remember where. I just checked and I don't have a Bootex.log file either. What can you say. It's windows.
Edit: Apparently the tip is correct, but only for W2k see

OK, I tried the following. I uninstalled Away Manager since it really isn't for the T42 anyway, but that made no difference. Then I uninstalled Kerio firewall, but that made no difference either.
Here is a better rundown of the errors I am getting.
1. PRONotifyComp802_3
Cannot Load Resource DLL
2. Kerio alert: Tool for planar replacement
Launched by cssauth
3. Kerio Outgoing connection alert: Tool for planar replacement
127.0.0.1, port 6060
4. Kerio Outgoing connection alert: Tool for planar replacement
local host [127.0.0.1], port 6060
5. The embedded security chip in your system is deactivated. It must be activated to make use of your Client Security Solution features. Would you like to activate it now? answer: YES
6. The embedded security chip is disabled. It must be activated in BIOS setup.
7. Kerio alert: Utility to enable the TPM
Tool for planar replacement.
8. Kerio alert: Outgoing connection alert
Utility to enable the TPM
Tool for planar replacement
127.0.0.1, port 6060
9. Kerio alert: Outgoing connection alert
Utility to enable the TPM
Tool for planar replacement
local host [127.0.0.1], port 6060
10. Norton AV won't open
11. Task Manager (ctrl + alt + del) won't open
12. Windows Error Reporting Dump Reporting Tool
Windows Task Manager
13. DrWatson Postmortem Debugger
Windows Task Manager
14. The Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Driver could not be loaded. Your system is not protected from viruses. Please restart your computer.
Check Disk itself is not reporting any errors.
PC-Doctor for Windows does not report any errors when running the hardware test scrips.
When I reboot, everything is fine - until I run the full Check Disk utility.
At first I was concerned about a hardware problem, but with the aid of your replies, I believe it is a software issue. Personally I think it might have something to do with the Client Security Solution (version 6) software or else the Rescue and Recovery (version 3) software. But this is just speculation unless others running this same software can corroborate my suspicions.

Have you had a resolution yet? By looking over the last post it looks like a battle of the security programs. Maybe time for a reinstall, I do that from time to time when things don't seem to be perfect. I back up my work data on CD's now and make sure that any programs I use are on CD and can be reinstalled..
I am watching with interest also...
I'm not convinced that by uninstalling a program, you can eliminate it as the cause of the problem in this case...
If it were a conflict...OK, but here we may have corruption of a tool designed to fix corrupted files...[EDIT: should read; 'a' corrupted file 'system']
It may be as Kyocera suggests, time to Reformat & reinstall...
I would reinstall everything to last known working state & proceed to eliminate suspect updates one by one...[running ck dsk after each]
Is ckdsk [auto fix-top box only(requires restart)] affected?..if so, you could save time using it. (As an indicator)

Thanks for the replies guys. So far I have not resolved the issue.
I am not ready right now to do a reinstall, as I don't want to spend the time. Like I said, it's been maybe a couple of months since I last ran Check Disk. In the meantime I have installed new software, upgraded several programs, done the Windows updates and IBM/Lenovo's updates. I don't feel confortable doing a System Restore to an earlier point with so many changes involved. When I get a little more free time, I might try uninstalling Norton, as well as do some web searches on this issue.
I would be curious to know if anyone else using Rescue and Recovery version 3 has tried Check Disk with both boxes ticked, and if they experienced any problems.
I am not quite as worried as I was in the beginning, as it seems that no permanent harm is being done. Check Disk itself runs fine. I believe the problem has something to do with the reporting done by Check Disk on reboot (or during the finish loading of the operating system). Once I reboot again, everything seems OK.
