Software to reduce noise and heat for Pentium III?

#1 Post by beeblebrox » Mon Nov 07, 2005 3:26 pm

Hi folks,
now that I had probably set a record for the most views on my other thread for the Centrino Hardware Control (I am really surprised!) I would like to ask you of anyone knows about a software to do the same on Pentium III (III-M) systems. Those older processors are running VERY hot and due to physics they should be able to run at a lower core voltage as well.

My other T20/T23 are running very hot and CHC can not control the chip set of the older ThinkPads.
Anyone know a solution? Help is highly appreciated.

IIRC the technology wasn't present on the PIII.

I haven't looked at the details of the PIII in a while though.

Speedstep is available on T2x machines. If you're running W2K or earlier you need the Intel Speedstep applet to get it to work (I know it's available as a driver or utility on the IBM site I just don't know where).

It's apparently built into XP. In any case, I'll repeat the question I asked in the other thread on this topic:

"What do you mean by very hot? I gave up monitoring temps on my T23's because they wouldn't go above about 43° C no matter what I did."
I used to be an anarchist but I quit because there were too many rules

of course, the speedstep works just fine.
But I want to lower the core voltage, which is far more effective in lowering heat than the speedstep.

It seems to me that only with centrino systems, programmers have started to examine the chipsets closer.

Only with Centrino did such functionalites exist to exploit. That's really the advantage of the P4M line of processors, especially the newer ones.
