Assuming I bought a brand new battery today, how long would it keep, assuming I just leave it inside its packaging? I've heard lots of weird things like putting them in the freezer, etc.

Altering Process of Bateries starts with the Date of Production.
Ad as it is a chemical Reaction you can (very roughly) say that every ten degrees which you keep it warmer doubles the speed of a process.
I assume this works here exactly the same - so it does make sense to keep your Battery at least in a very cool place. Dry shouldn't be necessary to mention...
Additionaly people often advice to keep a battery at between 20 and 80% (i would use 40%) loaded when storing it for a longer time.
I think that within the first year u loose about 10% of total power - even if it is only stored.
