A31p hayware after using Software Installer 3.15

#1 Post by 6MONTAGE » Wed Nov 16, 2005 3:08 pm

Just bought an A31p on eBAY, bought a new Li-On from IBM and installed it, and it was running beautifully.

Then used Software Installer 3.15 and accepted all new programs and
installed them.

Result: (1) No audio, (2) no onscreen display for audio level changes, (3)
battery never charges (on AC) beyond 3-20% -- and actually discharges while on AC.

I uninstalled the new audio drivers (SoundMAX) via Win2000 Add/Remove, and
the audio returned.

But how to fix # 2 and # 3? (I'm not a techie.)

As to the battery, the SpeedFan utility says it is at "Low Charging,
remaining capacity 1.42 W, full charge capacity 41.74 W). Incidentally,
with SpeedFan, should one check the box for "automatic fan speed?"

Should I try to remove the new drivers? If so, IBM driver matrix site does not display the old drivers (that were working); so where would I get them? In other words, how do I get the A31p back to where it was before I accepted all the new downloads from Thinkpad Software Installer 3.15?

Thanks in advance...

Did you update the BIOS and Embedded Controller first? You should do that before anything else.

Yes, I checked the BIOS first thing. It is definitely the current version.

As to "Embedded Controller" I'm afraid I don't even know what that means.

Embedded controller driver [& all others] can be found by starting here;
http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/ ;
Then; TP Notebooks/support & downloads [across top]/downloads & drivers [browse by topic]/enter thinkpad-workpad [brand]/enter TP A31p [family]/continue...This will take you to your drivers page. [Edit; bad link]

It's a shame the Software installer is not working for you...It's a great tool...My guess is your machine is no longer in the original configuration...

In any event I would read all instructions and readme files acompanying
drivers to be installed....

Sorry I can not help with on-screen display & power control issues , but I'm sure it's a matter of correct driver for these...

Perhaps someone more knowledgable in these matters will help...

Edit; Sorry for bad link...unable to link to driver page...[Should have used preview]

Edit 2; NOTE that there are 2 drivers listed for embedded controller on tpa31p ...both have same date...

Did find the Embedded Controller driver file. It shows the A31p up to date with version 1.05.

Sure is puzzling (and frustrating).

Wow - ok. Sounds very messed up. I'd try to download and reapply the software manually.
