scroll with trackpoint and word 2003

#1 Post by geobel » Wed Nov 16, 2005 5:56 pm

I have this problem since I have upgraded to word 2003. Scrolling through documents using trackpoint middle button works fine until I make some changes to document. Then scroll gets confined to the page with the change. Pressing save button, Ctl-S or using scroll bar rescues from the lock until the next change... Any solution is highly appreciated.

I've had this problem forever, both with my X40 and my old HP omnibook (ibm trackpoint/ibm drivers). I never knew it was associated with making changes though!

If you really push the trackpoint, you can force it over the edge, and it will shoot up to the bottom/top of the document.

Anyone have a solution to our problem?

Another problem I've had is with the IBM driver package. Holding the scroll button will change the pointer image to a pointer-on-a-scrollbar. For some reason, this causes performance issues with web browsers for me, so I switched to the HP software driver, which has less bells/whistles, and doesn't suffer from this problem. The HP package, on the other hand, is frequently unable to scroll horizontally.

I don't think it is unique to Word - I have seen that effect from time to time other places. However, I just opened a Word 2003 document, and:

(a) If I change nothing, I can scroll through with no problem (like you).
(b) If I make a change, the scroll appears to be locked in the current page (like you).
(c) But if I move my cursor off the change, scrolling returns to normal.

I hypothesize that Spell/Grammar checker is not complete (because I was still in the middle of the change) and that may cause the scrolling issue.

Overall it hasn't fussed me, but I do agree that it happens.

Thanks for replies! At least I am not alone with this problem. I always have automatic spell check off so it does not seem to be relevant. The most precise condition for the lock to happen is that a change was made and cursor is in the place of the change. There are in fact quite many ways to escape from the lock e.g. press Esc button or switch to another application and back by pressing Alt-Tab twice. The most convenient way is simply clicking the page with left button but I wish I had no locks at all.
