What do you guys do when you're not using your TP, do you switch it off, or put it on stand by?

Is it more stressful having to switch it on and off everytine you want to use your tp, or does it not matter.

If you guys prefer to put it on stand by, do you click the stand by tab, or do you just close the lid?

I have just got myself a tp, and so far, I've been switching it off whenever I'm not using it.

If I have open programs, and need to leave it for a longer time, I put it into standby, so my data/applications will not be lost.
If I'm done, I always shut it down completely.
For at brief interruption, I turn off the display, or close the lid, which I have set not to put it into standby. E.g. if it is in the process of downloading something, or after putting on a movie on the HTPC via VNC, closing the lid and tucking it away is my preference.

Mostly hibernate, uses less battery than standy. I don't use standby because it does use more battery resources.

I have two 770EDs I leave on constantly, and have been for 8 or so years. One I beleive was never shut off in 3 years straight! I now leave the screen on at all times because it takes several minutes to warm up to normal brightness if I don't; It has not been shut off since April. The other, which I use mostly, I hibernate when I take it travelling, otherwise it stays on and the screen blanks after 30 minutes.

By hibernating, do you mean just closing laptop shut while it's on?

I think it depends on your power settings whether it goes into standy, hibernation, etc, when the lid is closed. I click on: Start> Turn Off Computer, then hold down the Shift key so the Standby icon changes to Hibernate.

Yes, I have it set to go into hibernation when I close the lid. If you go to power options in control panel enable hibernation, and in advanced select "hibernate" when I close the lid of my portable computer. Using standby does use a little bit of battery power to store the current settings at the point which you suspended.

Here's the lowdown cut and pasted from my IBM Access Connections configuration manual:

Standby. In standby mode (called suspend mode in Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R)), both the computer display and the hard disk drive are turned off. To put your computer into standby mode, press Fn+F4. To return from standby mode, press Fn.

Hibernation. Using this mode, you can turn off your computer completely without saving files or exiting from any applications that are running. When you enter hibernation, all open applications, folders, and files are saved to the hard disk, and then the computer turns off. To enter hibernation, press Fn+F12. To resume your session, press the power button for no more than 4 seconds.

*Note: If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the computer does not consume any power. If the wakeup function is enabled, it consumes small amount of power.
