1.7 GHz Banias to 1.7GHz Dothan swap. Worth it?

I am here again for some advice from experts.

I am thinking of swapping the 1.7 GHz Banias in T41p with 1.7 GHz Dothan processor that is in T42 since the T41p is my main computer.

I know that Dothan has 2 MB cache instead of 1 MB.

I look at a lot of slides, documents, AV chat at the same time. I am also planning to go with a dual monitor set up because I am using many applicaitons at the same time.

I regularily use > 500 MB RAM.

So my question is, would the processor swap show noticeable performance increase? Or do you think the hassle is not worth it?

I had a hard time trying to find a benchmark of Banias and Dothan from identical systems. If anyone know of a link please let me know.

T41p and T42 are almost identical except for the graphics card. I swapped HD on T41p to 100GB 5400 rpm so now both have 5400 rpm drives.

Any opinions? I will have 2 weeks break soon and I would like to do it then if possible.

Thanks.

JK

Not worth it IMO. You will void your warranty and possibly screw up your computer for a very small upgrade in speed, hardly noticeable in your applications. For your case, load up with as much RAM as possible, it is cheap and will make a big difference since swapping on the HD (the slowest part of a laptop's operation) will be minimized.

You would gain about 5% in benchmarks... not worth it IMO.

Not worth it. I moved from a 1.4GHz Banias to a 1.8Ghz Dothan, and that was worth it, but not in the category of smashingly worth it. ... JD Hurst

I agree; it isn't worth it to simply gain a small increase in the speed of you CPU (which only matters for certain tasks) whilst putting your system at great risk. The Benefit/Risk Ratio is not too promising. :)

OK. No swap it is.

Thanks!!
