I1200 550MHZ Celeron

#1 Post by turbo » Thu Dec 08, 2005 8:25 pm

I have a 1200 sitting here. Seemed to work fairly well with Win ME in it , then it got locked up, tried to restore didn't work. I didn't have a full ME copy "just the restore, so I decided to load XP Pro.

Long story short its slower than mollasses. The boot is about 3 minutes.

I have 64 meg of extra memory, but I am replacing that with the 128 which I guess is the largest I can go. Will that do it?

So the question is.....anything else I can do to speed this thing up?
I have an 802.11g wirelss card, so part of the boot is Lan Connection. I have an MFC Brother Ethernet Connected printer, so that occupies some time to complete during boot. The bad news......thats after the 3 minute boot to the desktop?
I have every type of spyware, adaware and have checked that I do not have any unwanted aliens resident. The harddrive is 5Gig and is 90% full so I am wondering if its temp file swapping during boot that is adding the time?

Should I try to find a full copy of ME and go back....should I shoot the thing and put myself out of my misery. The computer is my wifes....hence the need to shoot someone/thing.

When full up run, the following programs run
Norton Virus
Print spooler for Brother
Lan software

Thats about it. I have done the MSCONFIG thing and disabled all unnecessaries and still take 3 minutes to complete boot where I can use the Start button.

By the way I tried using the search at the top of the page to see if others had this problem and got a zillion hits none addressing the problem

any help would be appreciated.
