I've been experiencing sluggish startup so thinking maybe it was because there were too many icons in the System Tray, [10-12], I eliminated all that I could, down to five; but some keep coming back: wireless network connnection,access IBM message center,google desktop search, volume, safely remove hardware [can't find an exit for this one]on ac power [dittto] and easy eject. Which ones are really important and how can I oblete those with no option to do so?
Also, since I did this, the green lights that used to appear on the monitor to show sound and light variances have disappeared and I can't figure out how to get them back.Did I delete something that connected to them?

You can click on the Start Button, and go to "Run". Type in msconfig, then go to the "Startup" tab. You can choose which applications/processes to remove from startup.

When you reboot the computer, a box will pop up, remember to click the little box that says not to show this again.

the reason they keep reappearing is because they are starting up again with each bootup. The safely remove hardware is a good guy, leave him there, wireless network connection icon is not using any resources but if you want to get rid of the icon go to start properties and taskbar and customize your notifications to always hide or go to the wireless network connection properties and at the bottom select what you wan the icon to do. The google thing should be removed through add/remove programs to get rid of it. The IBM msg center icon can be selected not to show in the taskbar from it's program. Easy eject can be removed through the add/remove programs to, I did this as it is not really a needed program unless you are running a bunch of peripheral devices. In thinkpad configuration find the OSD (on screen display) and check the box below the monitor gui. Follow tiff's advice to completely stop programs from starting at bootup. There was a thread a while back that described what most of the programs are and if they really need to be on the start menu.

That is where/how I removed some of them before, but I really don't understand what most of those abbreviations stand for so I didn't want to delete what I didn't know. Is there somewhere that would explain what they are?

I believe the following thread is the one Kyocera was referring to. To search on this forum, click on the Search icon at the top of the page and type in a few keywords to search on. I usually also choose the radio button to: "Search for all terms".

Does msconfig exist in WIN2K??? I can't find it anywhere on my hard drive, and trying to run it from the command line gives an error message that it can't find it...??

NO.

I use the startup control panel instead of msconfig. According to the website it works with Win2k.

I had my sister add it so that I could walk her through the process on her system, as she is about 1000 miles away. It worked great!!
