I have Rescue n Recovery 3.0. Whenever I run a backup, I get the messaage from my firewall that r2r.exe is trying to access the internet. I deny access, and the backup proceeds happily anyway. Why does it want to do this? And am I missing out on anything by not letting it do it?

Well, I can't explain why a local system backup would want to access the internet; but I don't see why you should deny access to it. Even though, I don't think you are missing anything out by doing that.

I thought the R&R environmet uses a mozilla browser and it probably is searching for a port (hence the firewall acting up) to connect to get on the internet.

Hmm. I thought it uses the Opera browser. But this is from my memory, which is sometimes faulty. I am too busy to check right now - to verify.

You are right the .doc on RNR say that Opera is the browser of choice.

This I remember by reading the text.


Also, my manual on RNR is of October 05. It still mentions v 2.0 ???

Yes it is Opera, but wether it is Opera, Firefox, IE, or whatever the point was in the fact that it is a browser and it does try to access the internet and to do that it has to open ports and since firewalls block ports.....that was the point of the post.....I've used certain feature within the R&R environment and if you notice the browser (Opera) will have the ibm web site url in it. So your computer may be trying to access the IBM web site.

R&R allows you to backup to network devices. It's prolly just checking to see what is available. Firewalls are not real good at distinguishing between the local network and the internet.

Yesterday, I used the trial possibility of True Image, ran quite well and in 18 minutes, it gave me a perfect image of my HD, down to the smallest iota.

I then did an RNR back up of the same drive on another external USB HD and that took 4:40 hours. I can not see that HD on my system this morning. It is supposed to be X:\ but is well hidden. Does this mean that the RNR BU is not good ? I will have a look later using FDISK, in DOS.

Now, why would RNR take so long when it is possible to do a full image using TI, in 18 minutes ? What are TP users using ? RNR might be defeating itself by this long tedious process. When using TI, the LED on the USB HD was lit fully all the time, when using RNR, it would flash ON at 1.5 sec intervals. Obviously, TI is the better choice.

Opinions please. JP.

Does your firewall tell you the address it's trying to make a connection with? In all liklihood, it's trying to connect to a local service, either via localhost or 0.0.0.0

Does your firewall tell you the address it's trying to make a connection with? In all liklihood, it's trying to connect to a local service, either via localhost or 0.0.0.0

Well, that or.. you might want to repost your question in a new thread, given that this thread was started by the person with the firewall question, so one would expect the posted replies to relate to that questions....

Yes, it was all about and titled RNR. But the echo is quite flexible and will drift as it did here. No bad.

I am now using True Image from Acronis instead of RNR, 18 minutes instead of 4:50 hours and the external USB HD is made bootable too.
