DARK DISPLAY

OK....I really need some quick replies please...I am looking at a IBM 240 with a dark display...person says they had it replaced because the original one was "jumping"...now it is too dark to see without a flashlight.
any one have any ideas? is this a bad backlight or inverter or what?
