hard drive going bad

#1 Post by yawnmoth » Tue Jan 10, 2006 3:17 am

I have a ThinkPad T30 whose hard drive is going bad. I backed up about 10gb worth of stuff, reformated it and ran checkdisk only to find that 65,000+ sectors - about 200mb's worth - had gone bad. I called IBM up asking if I could get a new hard drive under the ThinkPads warranty, and was told that 65,000+ bad sectors wasn't enough.

I sorta muttered something along the lines of "I hope my hard drive hurries up and fails" and the IBM representative than suggested that I run PC-Doctor to test my hard drive.

The hard drive passes all the tests.

So I figured I'd try to copy the 10gb worth of files back to the computer, and find that I can't without getting a blue screen of death. Looking at the System Event Viewer, I see such things as:
  • An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk9\D during a paging operation
  • {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.
  • The device, \Device\de\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.
  • The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was:
    0x0000007a (0xc03e4784, 0xc000000e, 0xf91e1624, 0x0d572860). A dup was saved in: ...
And that's just from copying the files. It'd seem that every time I've turned the computer on, I've also gotten the following:
The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediatly back up your data and replace your hard disk. A failure may be imminent.
My question is... what the heck do I have to do to get a new hard drive under my laptops warranty? Save for PC-Doctor (whose results I'm gonna dismiss as [censored]), all indications are that my hard drive is going to need to be replaced. Since it apparently isn't bad enough, yet, just how bad does it need to be? Do the platters need to be shattering before a replacement can be made?

All in all, IBMs response is more annoying than the hard drive, itself. I'd normally buy a new one, myself, were it not for (1) I don't like IBMs attitude and (2) if I get a new one, I lose the hidden partition (I've made another post about this).

Any advice would be appreciated - thanks!

Per this thread, I've called IBM up, again, and am getting a new hard drive. :)
