cd/dvd drive (sd-c2402) not reading disks

I tried searching this, but did not really find what I was looking for. I took out the cd drive in my thinkpad i1400 and replaced it with a cd/dvd drive. I removed the cd/dvd drive from an external cd/dvd drive (I think there bad components in the external dvd drive (the chip had something spilled on it I think). Anyways, when I turned on the laptop with the cd/dvd in it, the laptop recognized it as a dvd drive and recognized the exact model (sd-c2402). The problem is, whenever I put a cd or dvd in the drive, the laptop does not recognize that there is a disk in the drive. It just says, "Please insert a disk into drive E:\" or something like that. I tried updating the driver, but windows said that there was no newer driver to replace it with. I saw on other sites that people had trouble with just playing dvds, but I can't play a cd or a dvd. Some people also mentioned a problem with using this model on windows xp, but I don't know if that is true. My problem does not resemble any other examples I have seen. Does anyone know anything I can try?
