My T42 is crashing and giving a blue screen when I try to copy a Firefox file from the desktop to a folder.
Can anyone suggest a solution.
I hope this is an appropriate question for the forum I come from the Macintosh background and haven't had much experience with Windows.

I haven't heard of that one before. Try this method, right-click on the file and choose copy (or cut), then navigate to the folder you want the file in, right-click in the folder and choose paste.

What do you mean by a "Firefox file?" Something downloaded?

If so, ensure you have Firefox's download manager enabled (CTRL + J to display; Tools > Options > Downloads to configure). Sounds like the file isn't done downloading when you try to move it. In my installation (1.5), I don't have download manager displayed, but it pops up a little notification at the bottom-right of my desktop when the file is done. Use

Thanks for the replies. The problem occurs when I try to move a page that I have downloaded onto the desktop. When I try to put the downloaded file into a folder to tidy up and organise the desktop the computer crashes. Hope this clarifies the issue.

It's important to know what the error on the bluescreen was.

My guess would be a filesystem related error.

I'd do the following
Start Menu --> Run...

enter "chkdsk /r"

say yes when it asks to check on boot

reboot your computer and scan.

Thanks for the replies.
I tried chkdsk. The report did not stay vissable for long , but I could not see any errors reported.

There are lots of things we could guess and check into, but frankly a BSOD (that blue screen) is serious stuff. If you dare do it again, could you copy down and post the exact error that you get? Maybe now is a good time to do a backup before you try it again....

Indeed.

Also try this:

Right click on My Computer, and select "Manage"
Select "Events Viewer" and then "System"

Find the error (not just "an error", but make sure it matches date/time of your bluescreen since more than one may be in that log) and post the data specified when you open it.

That would also help.

Thanks for the information. I have backed up my system.
I tried copying the files again but this time no or blue screen of death.
Looking back at the errors reported in manage system I am fairly sure the error reported when I saw the blue screen was:
error system error (102) 1003.

Thanks for all the help.
I am having a problem following the directions however.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. In the Address box, type %windir%\system32\drivers, and then press ENTER.
3. Locate the randomly named .sys file, right-click the file, and then select Rename

I cannot find any .sys file ?
Any sugestions

Go to Windows Update and download the microsoft malicious software removal tool. It may help ...

Otherwise, if you've got spyware, you may just want to buy strong anti-spyware software.

Thanks for all the help.
The error is definitely 102 and the problem persists, but I have no virus problems according to Symeantec virus. No spyware left with AdWare and skybot (All up to date ).
Windows malicious software also reports no problems.
The steps suggested by windows in error 102 have not made any difference.
Any other suggestions welcome

I didn't recall you saying yea or nay to my query, but I tried moving a file from the desktop to another folder WHILE Firefox was still downloading the file ... no BSOD for me (using Firefox 1.5, btw. If you're still on 1.0x, suggest an upgrade).

Do you have any OTHER problems moving files around, or is it ONLY the files that Firefox downloaded? If it's only Firefox ... you might backup your bookmarks (look under Documents and Settings ... it's an HTML file), uninstall, and then install it clean.

And just for the sake of more harddrive testing, you could open a CMD window and run "chkdsk /f" (without the quotes) ... it will ask if you want it done on the next reboot, answer yes. Reboot. /f will fix any errors on your drive. After entering windows, run (Start -> Run...) CLEANMGR ... the disk cleanup tool ... it will do some things like clearing out temp files, caches, etc. ... then run DFRG.MSC to analyze fragmentation of the drive. Might need some defragmentation.

Here's a page with more explicit instructions and advice:

I have got to Firefox 1.5 but will give all your suggestions a try.The problem and is only happening with Firefox files so hopefully deleting the program and reinstalling it should fix the problem . Thanks for your help as I am still a bit lost with Windows (but learning quickly).

That error doesn't sound Firefox related, though updating is never a bad thing.

No improvment with the re-instilation of Firefox. I decided to restore the T42 back to the original factory instalation, but the "accessIBM" button on start up wont work (just gives a DOS prompt) so there are obviously some more major problems. PC doctor gives a clean bill of health on components. I rang IBM help and the answered the phone promptly and were very helpfull. They are sending out some recovery discs.
Thanks for all help and opinions from the forum

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY T42! It used to happen when I was moving files around.

Righ after booting from a Blue Screen I was welcomed with a message from Windows saying that this is a KNOWN ISSUE with Thinkpads running old versions of Rescue&Recovery. I never happened again after updating R&R.

Why don't you try this?
