IBM Pre-Installed Startup Software.

Hi.
Out of all the IBM Startup stuff, what i can i disable safely?
Heres whats running at the moment on startup:


Can someone tell me what each of the 'ticked' ones do.
As apart from the Adobe one, Daemon, Avast, iTunes & SMC Service, i have no idea what the other ones do.

The only one ive safely disabled is the IBM software that allows the 56k modem to detect digital lines, which i'll never be using anyway.

I did search the forum, but i couldnt find any concrete information.

That is a very long list of programs, and it does not seem reasonable (to me) to ask us to sort through the list to imagine what you like and don't like. I leave most IBM services running except for IBM Messages (and the newest version of this can be managed within the application).

I suggest you go to Google, enter the program description in Google, research each one, and then make your own determination about whether the service should remain running for you. For example, ctfmon is benign, and I would not bother to disable it, but you have.

I wasnt intending this thread to be a thread just for me, if people added descriptions for all of the default IBM softwares that are installed, then it could be used by many people who are new to TP's, and want to know what does what and if they can disable it.

Some of those you could mess with at your own peril, but some ... find them in Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) and end the process. See what goes away. Some items are in the Windows Dessert Tray (aka Notification area, aka SysTray), and not entirely needed, others are services/background apps that are needed for TP utility functions. If you go messing around in MSCONFIG and rebootin', do a system restore point and good, reliable backup.

Some educated guesswork will answer your questions. Just look at the icons. For instance, look at TPSHOCKS ... no mystery there. ControlCenter, cssauth ... another easy guess. EJEJMNAP ... might not be so obvious, but try FN + F9, and let us know what happens . PDService.exe ... easy. QCTRAY ... easy. TPKMAPHELPER ... key mapping utility. TpScrLk .. hit SCROLL LOCK and see what happens . QCTRAY and QCWLICON can, I think, be disabled from the Quick Connections app, just explore the option settings.

By now the list of unknown ones must be getting smaller, eh?

BTW, I leave AcroTray running, I don't want to remember to run it when I need a PDF ... but like you I kill qttask.exe with extreme prejudice.
