Product Recovery CD only available during warranty period?

I noticed the following while perusing IBM's site this morning. This info was Last modified: 2005-10-31.

How can I get a Product Recovery CD?

IBM wrote:If you cannot use the F11 service partition or have had hard drive failure, you will need to obtain a recovery CD by contacting the Support Center. Please be aware that the Product Recovery CD may only be available if your machine is still in warranty. A fee may be involved.

Note: We no longer distribute recovery media for the following discontinued operating systems:

* Microsoft Windows 95
* Microsoft Windows 98, 98SE
* Microsoft Windows NT
* Microsoft Windows Me
* Microsoft Windows 2000

Well, what can I say? Ya can't buy a left front fender for a 57 Ford down at the Ford dealer anymore, either.

No, but I just bought my T42 last year and already the warranty is expired. If my hard drive goes belly up tomorrow and the Product Recovery Discs that I burned don't work.... If I'm burned, then I won't be a happy camper.

I don't consider my (2005) T42 to be in the same catagory warranty wise as a 57 Ford.

Well, what I get out of the above is that IBM/Lenovo doesn't support operating systems that MS no longer supports. I'm sure your T42 came with Win XP of some sort, right? i would think that your R&R disks would restore your thinkpad to the condition it was when purchased.

The following line is what I was referring to. The other information is just extra.

I recently got CD's for various T2x machines from members here for a limited purpose: to burn True Image backups of the original system configuration, including the service partition. I've got a couple T23's that came with XP still under warranty and I see no reason to buy CD's from IBM. Made TI images of those too. Now that I've got the TI backups I have no reason to have the CD's

This may be more of a problem for those of you with the HPA, because True Image appears to have a problem of sorts with that.

So, after all that, here's the question: Does anyone here know, or has anyone tried to get recovery CD's for a machine that is out of warranty, but shipped with XP?.

Recently, when this issue has come up, it's someone looking for a cd for W2k, etc. Until we have information that IBM won't sell you recovery CD's if the machine is out of warranty, we don't have much of a problem.

Regarding recovery cd for warranty and non warranty machines the following applies.

A machine wihtin warranty can only get recovery cd when the hardrive fail or when the recovery partition does not work. If any of these occur cd are sent under warranty.

A machine without warranty recovery cd can be purchased for about £39 but only Windows Xp.
Regarding W2K, 98 etc they are no longer available since Microsoft has stopped shipment and manufacuring of these.

Note also that newer machines from T42, X40 and R50 you can make your own recovery cd from within Windows Xp as long as the machine still have the preload or factory Windows XP. Check "start" "program" and "thinkvantage Technology"
Otherwise press "Access IBM" at boot to start Rescue and Recovery to put the preload back again by select restore to factory contents.
