Transplanting a Sony DVD/CD-R/W into a ThinkPad

Hi, all,
so, it seems that the Sony PCG GRX416SP of an aquaintance of mine first fried its display and then let the magic smoke out of its mainboard. Now, I'm toying with the idea of transplanting its DVD/CD-R/W drive (model# CRX 810E, Vers. BB) into my trusty ol' A30p.
A first look suggests that the open-button is in the wrong location, so the plastic covering at the outer rim of the tray will have to stay after being treated with a file to fit the TP's UltraBay opening.
Now the electronical side: When I take off the pink Sony frame and put it into the black IBM frame which currently holds the CD-ROM, I should be able to connect the DVD-thingy, right? And, softwarily, the drive is a regular ATA device, right? And it should simply work[TM], right? RIGHT? Don't tell me otherwise, please.
Or well, do tell me whatever expericene you have ...
Edit: Said aquaintance is now a happy owner of a T43p. Go figure :-)
cheers,
