Will Lenovo start using AMD chips?

#1 Post by notebooknewbie » Thu Feb 02, 2006 6:46 pm

I know that IBM used to use AMD chips in their desktops and laptops years ago (I have some IBM ads from the late 90s that show this), but they seem to have moved to Intel only these days.

With AMD bringing out better and better chips, plus commanding a higher market share, do you guys think there's a chance that Lenovo might try putting some AMD chips in their upcoming ThinkPads?

Hmmm.. it seems IBM, as other manufacturers, use the chip du jour in their machines but seeing that Intel offers a solid lineup (good compatibility) mobile CPU's then maybe they'll be around for a while yet - even though AMD gains market share, as you state.

In terms of Big Iron computing, AMD is gaining rapidly on Intel in terms of marketshare.

For Mobile system, however, Intel still holds a far lead over AMD with power consumption and performance. Heck, IBM makes the PowerPC Chips...Why don't they make mobile systems out of those like Apple did with the Powerbooks? It seems that Intel has put a good deal of work in to getting their Mobile platform out there and supporting it, so I am not suprised that IBM has focused on them for such a long time.

IBM did make their own PowerPC based Thinkpads too ;) :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

If the Chinese were to produce a 30 dollar windows emulator, I would buy it in a blink of an eye. Scruw that billionaire skinny nerd in Seatle.
No need to wait, no need to pay $30:
