I have a T42p (2373 ktu) and am looking for some external storage. I'm not a hardware guy and I'd like to try using an internal drive with an external case type setup. Please let me know if what I've chosen will work. My main concern is a good drive to protect my data in the event that my computer's HD crashes.

I'm planning to get all this from newegg. Any suggestions are welcome.

Option 1 (read lots of good reviews of the drive)
- Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136003)

- KINGWIN TL-35USBS 3.5" USB2.0 (type B) Black External Enclosure - Retail
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817121184)

- ORION Pro Series Red 18" 180 and 90-Degree-Angled, SATA (SERIAL ATA 150) Cable, 2-Head (RED) Model 700-201-05 - Retail
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812104557) - I've read the wires don't come with either drive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Option 2
- Maxtor MaxLine III 7L300R0 300GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822144237)

- KINGWIN MS-350U-S 3.5" USB 2.0 External Enclosure - Retail
Model #: MS-350U-S

Thanks!

See this article for a short tutorial on the procedure: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1916862,00.asp

You shouldn't need the Orion cable. The enclosure should have the drive interface and power connectors built in.

Also, both the drive and the enclosure will likely come with instructions for hooking it all up.
