What machine for surfing and e-mail only
What machine for surfing and e-mail only
What would be the best machine to look for solely for surfing the net and using e-mail...also would need to support being run wirelessly.
Been looking on e-bay for a used or refurbished one just for those purposes...i'd like to be able to run XP on it though...HD would need only to be big enough to install security apps ect.
Specs confuse me so any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you'd be well served with one of the IBM Certified Used T23's available direct from IBM for approximately $425 or so. Perfectly fine for web browsing, office and general usage. These models include XP Pro (some are windows 2000) and come with 90 day warranty and 7 day money back with free shipping.

Thanks guys...wolfman i'm in the UK and IBM here don't sell their own machines they use re-sellers.
I was thinking more along the lines of an older series machine that would accept wireless...just needs to be portable from room to room so weight wouldn't matter.

You have a wide range of notebooks to choose from, for what you say you want. I am not recommending this model but using it only as an example. I took a PIII Compaq Presario 1200 series, 700 MHz notebook that has a main memory limit of 320MB, set it up with a Sandisk Combo 128 Flash & wi-fi card for my daughter. I maxed the memory. She loves it for Internet surfing.lutami wrote: IBM here don't sell their own machines they use re-sellers.

Just make sure the notebook has Windows 98SE or higher, a PC card slot & a USB port. I would advise at least 512MB memory capability. A PIII 700 MHz processor will do the job fine. The Compaq Presario 1200 series, especially the 12XL--- models surf at a good clip, they were small & light for their day (Smaller & about the same weight as the Thinkpad T2- series). Or, you could get a T23 at eBay from a UK seller (with minimum 99% positive feedback) for less than Lenovo-IBM sells them.
I surf the web from a chair in front of TV & on the road with an NEC Mobilepro 790, a clamshell, 8hour per charge battery powered, clam shell handheld. It weighs less than 2 pounds & is instant on and off. You can get one at eBay.
