USB HUB

#1 Post by atct86 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 4:29 pm

I am in need of a USB 2.0 hub. I would Like it to possibly be able to hang over the back of my desk rather than have a block on the desktop.

I also want one that is reliable enough for an external harddrive and also has power to charge my iPod.

Any reccomendations?

I've got a couple of these which work well for me: http://www.compusa.com/products/product ... ode=310728 (Compusa reference not an endorsement)

The hub is about 3.75" inches long and 2.5" wide and weighs about nothing. Comes with a 5v adapter that may not be necessary to power the hub, but that I've used to power a 2.5" USB drive enclosure. No problems encountered connecting external drives to this hub.

Be careful. Some USB hubs are 2.0 but do not allow power to pass through meaning that the device on the other end has to be self powered. Translated, this means that you might not be able to use devices that depend on the USB bus for power such as mice, USB powered hard drives, PDA cradles which charge off the USB and the like.

I've got a Dlink 7 port hub (powered, of course) that is pretty good. I've had a few 'drop outs' but I think it's because i was running four external, powered hard drives from the hub and either it or my X40 said "that's enough".

In addition to what smugiri said, this hub (and others) claim that if you run a 1.1 device through the hub all other devices (even 2.0) will be throttled down to 1.1. Somethink like that, anyway. For whatever you buy, see if you can download the manual online first.

How are the USB pass throughs on the IBM Docks?

What are my options for a dock? I notice the mini-dock can be had on ebay for around $40.
