Then I experimented and found that to activate the "Copy" button, I had to select a file initially, instead of selecting folders so as to group-select all of the files in it. Thereafter, I could select folders and files at will. While the software didn't show the free space declining on the destination drive as I made selections, the function actually copied all selected folders and files to the destination drive once I clicked the "Copy" button. So there's one small problem solved.I want to "rescue files" using the "Restore Files and Folders" function that is found in the "Rescue and Recovery" area. I want to copy selected files to a USB hard drive. The R&R software recognizes the USB drive as the destination. However, when I select files (the 3rd of 4 steps), while the R&R software shows checkmarks in the boxes, the software (1) doesn't show any change in the free space on the destination drive and (2) doesn't activate the "Copy" button (that is, the button remains grayed-out). Therefore, I'm unable to complete the file-saving operation. What to do?
If anyone has advice about dealing with the larger problem (below), I'll appreciate hearing it. (I do know already that a major cause of my distress is my failure to make regular backups.)
Here's the background on my problem. The "Spy Falcon" malware has invaded the ThinkPad. I tried to remove it manually, but I couldn't remove certain files. Some advice from the internet suggested starting Windows in the "Safe" mode. I tried that using the F8 key, but it didn't work. Then I used MSCONFIG to boot in "Safe" mode, which also didn't work, but--worse--now I can't get Windows to start at all. Since I don't have a bootable disc, I decided the only solution is to restore from the last previous "Rescue and Recovery" backup. Unfortunately, that backup was done last May. I'm ready to bite the bullet and rebuild my applications.
