t 40 and router security

Hi,
I have a t40 and never set up any security on the wireless I have for it. I have the router ipaddress and a default gateway. They are different. I clicked on the ip address and received a dialog box asking for a name and password??? I've never set anything up before with the router?? How do I proceed from here.

Actually, I'm not sure I need to even do this. Lots of my friends are astounded I don't have a secure wireless set up. I don't have many files of importance on my ThinkPad, and the ones I do are password protected. Am I being naive, or are they over reacting??

You have simply opened the web browser setup function of your router, I don't know what brand you have but if you have the original documentation that came with it it will tell you what the default user name and pswd is to access the web function. If your router is working fine you reallly don't need to mess around in there especially if you are not sure what to do.

I have LInksys router 54G type. I have all the Docs, but nothing is said about this. I'll go look again too.

It works perfectly, but a lot of my friends think I need security from "neighbors??" They do all have curtains hiding something in their houses<g>, but I don't have anything critical on my notebook, and what I do want to protect is password protected anyway.
