When I use software Installer & Add/Remove Programs trying to uninstall AC 4.01 i Get

An Installation support file could not be installed. The system cannot find the file specified. Why is that?

Is it because I manually downloaded 4.01 and installed it?That doesn;t make any sense. Should I first use the software installer to upgrade to AC 4.11 then try to uninstall then?

If possible, I would try to reinstall the version you want to uninstall (4.01). Reboot, then try uninstall again.

The file you need for version 4.01 is 77cn36ww.exe . I have it, but I am on a slow cell phone connection right now. If you want this file, put in a request on this forum and likely someone will have it and send it to you. The file is about 10 MB.

EDIT: If you have not installed 4.11, you may still have 4.01 in the following directory. C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON . You can also look in for a file called IBMTPI.XML (there will be many) in one of the subdirectories of C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\ that has the text: "Access Connections" and "4.01" (without quotes) in it. You can double-click on IBMTPI.XML or SWI.XML to see what they contain.

Actually I have that file. What I wanted to do was to go back to version 3.8/3.7

So I upgraded to 4.11a then uninstalled. I have the driver or 3.8.
So intallshield tells me they want to run setup in C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON

Now I remember that when manually installed 4.01a I put it in the same folder but there were alot of files they it asked me to overwrite or create new ones. Instead of having double files I remember I put to overwrite them. Could that be why i had problems installing?

Should i name the folder C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON V 3.8. That way I don't get confused.? If so what would I do with this older. Losing my profiles would'nt be that big of a deal.

That first folder it just where it puts the setup launcher. When I click setup it is actually asks to put int in C:\Program Files/Thinkpad\Connect Utilities?

So I guess my final question or overall questions is how do I not get duplicates files ?

To find out where the setup files are located, go to Start > Search, and type .xml in the file name box and Access Connections in the word or phrase box. Choose Look in: browse, and browse to the C:\DRIVERS directory, then search. Double-click on the .xml files found in search and look for a version number. You will see in the search path for the .xml file, where that particular file is located.

What I do as a rule is download the file (drivers and software) from IBM's driver matrix page, and all these files are saved in the C:\DownloadDirector\ directory. Each of these files have unique filenames, so you don't have to worry about overwriting anything. When you double-click on one of these downloads, the files are extracted to a subdirectory in the C:\DRIVERS\ directory (but the original download stays in the C:\DownloadDirector\ directory). At this time you will probably overwrite the existing files. But if you keep the original download in C:\DownloadDirector\ directory, then that is not a problem because you can always get the previous version back by double-clicking on that version to extract it's files. I hope this is clear.

The profiles are stored as a .loc file. You can save these to any location you like if you are worried about losing them, however when you choose to uninstall Access Connections in Add or Remove Programs, it asks you if you want to keep the existing profiles or not. Version 4.11a also lets you export the profiles to a .loc file for saving. I am not sure about previous versions.

Okay I did the whole search thing. Several Files say C": Program Files IBM Tvtmessage Res#####
and a few other files.

I have no idea what you mean by C directory and all that. I don't have a Downloads Directory just the driver file i i talked about before. I Just wanted to put the new 3.8 and all its files and replace ALL others in the past.
why can't i just delete all the files in the y. C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON .

But that just leavees me with the THinkpad\Utilities ... folders I don't know what is in that?

The C:\DownloadDirector\ directory is automatically created when you use IBM's Download Director to download drivers or software. For instance, I'll post a link to get to the driver matrix page for your ThinkPad. If you choose to download a driver or software from this page, it will ask you if you want to use Download Director. Download Director uses Java, so I suppose if you don't have a version of Java installed, you wouldn't be using Download Director.

Downloads and drivers

The .xml files have the information to let you know which software is in the directory that you are looking at. Double-click on the .xml file and read through it, then you should see which software or driver it applies to, and which version. So if you open and look at the IBMTPI.XML or SWI.XML file in the C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON directory, that will tell you what software will be installed if you double-click on Setup.exe in the same directory. It is possible however that if you have more than one .xml file in a directory, then you have more than one version of the software that was extracted to that directory. In that case, look at the file with the most recent date to get the correct info. I will paste below a portion of SWI.XML that is in my C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON directory.
You will notice at the top, that the version is 4.11a. At the bottom is the "NAME">ThinkVantage Access Connections.

So tell me this what is actually stored in C:\DRIVERS\W2K\ACCON besides the set up launcher.


And then what is stored in :\Program Files/Thinkpad\Connect Utilities?
this is the default file when I open install shied and attempt to install?
