Possible solution to "Invalid Machine Type" error

#1 Post by daeojkim » Wed Mar 01, 2006 2:52 am

Okay!! this must have worked with older version of Software Installer.
My bad... :(

It seemed to have worked until december last year. :(
============================================

It seems like a lot of people have been having problem with "invalid machine type" error when using Software Installer.

There is a solution to this that have been confirmed to have worked with everyone that have tried so far.

Check following registry

---------------------------------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
IBM
ThinkPadSoftwareInstaller
SysInfoOW

MachineType 2373
ModelName HVU
-------------------------------

In the "MachineType" put the thinkpad's model number
In the "ModelName" put the letters in capital letter
as shown in above example.

save then re-run software installer.
Of course, this will not fix the problem in the BIOS, but at least it will allow you to update drivers and softwares on your computer. Also you would have to do this again if OS is reinstalled.

If anyone tried this and if it has worked please let us know.

Still works. In the newest version of the installer, if you truly have invalid information in bios for your type & model, you'll be allowed to enter that information into the application.
