PC Doctor trouble with HD test - what does it mean?

#1 Post by JEBB » Thu Mar 16, 2006 8:34 pm

In running PC-Doctor on my hard disk it gets to the second test, SMART Self-Test and stops at 29%. It gets no further and consequently doesn't run the last four tests. The first test, SMART Status Test, it gets to 100% with no problem.

So what does that mean about my hard disk?

Thanks.

Have you replaced one?

Looking at the maintenance manual I downloaded, it doesn't appear to be too difficult. Agree?

I do have Acronis 8 for creating a disk image.

But first I'd like to determine if it is a program malfunction. Replacing good parts is something my auto mechanic does; I'd rather not.

Changing a drive is an easy as changing the battery, only difference is that you have to open 1 (yes only 1) screw.

You can find some instructions on how to carry out this very easy mainatainance task here

Does your computer generate its own Product Recovery CD's?
Or do you have (or can buy) Product Recovery CD's?

Just swap in new HDD, pop in the Product Recovery CD's and let it run... may take a few hours...

How much is your data worth?

Depending on what machine you have, there may be dos-based pc dr. diagnostics in the service partition -- check there. That could eliminate problems generated by other windows apps.

You could also download & run pc dr. drive specialist, or DFT (from hitachi) and run those, they run from bootable CDs.
