New software installer

There is a new Software Installer out (3.50.xxxx). Now this is one application that you either update or forget permanently about running it. So I put the new version in today.

All day today, it will not access the site - just hangs. If I quit, restart and uncheck the box to find new packages, it works just fine on the existing files. So it kind of works (useless at this point). So the site is either down right (happened before) or the update is flawed.

Bill

I ran the update and installed the new version earlier today without any problems. The only other update that I needed was the AC update, but decided to hold out a little while on that one.

I downloaded and ran the update last night John, no problems connecting then or now.

Maybe it doesn't like you?

I checked with CommView. It tries to link to a 9.x.x.x. site (which is IBM), sends packets out, but receives nothing. Consider reporting it if you can, JHEM. Thanks. ... JD Hurst

I uninstalled the new, installed the prior, and let the prior update itself. The prior version uses 204.146.30.17 and https only. The new version uses 9.7.85.107 and https plus netbios-ns. Nothing is received from 9.7.85.107. The upgrade flow was properly received from 204.146.30.17.

Same problem here. Let the old version update itself. New version hangs. Uninstalled and will wait for an update.

I wonder somehow if it country dependent? So far I cannot see a reason. I can clearly see packets sent and nothing returned (and I mean really zero packets). Strange. ... JD Hurst

Post note: Next day, after a cold re-start, I can see (CommView) that the new version heads out to 204.146.30.17 (Boulder) and gets responses. It then switches to 9.7.85.107 and continues to send out packets. There has never been so much as a single packet (in 24 hours of testing) from that IP. ... JD Hurst

FWIW, I just let my existing SI update, then updated Access Connections, and rebooted. Nothing so much as a burp.

I put 9.7.85.107 in SpamCop and got "9.7.85.107 is not a routeable IP address" back. It is not one of the 10.; 172.; 192. private address but strange it is. And this may be why it is somehow country specific.

I used it with vista and it worked fine.

I am aware of the problem with the DLA software showing up

Hey Folks,
We are working on the Problem withe the DLA upgade showing up. Should have it fixed soon.
I will take a look at the connectivity issues you guys have been experiencing and see if we might have another problem.

I was doing the update to the application files on Thursday so there may have been a period when connectity was lost as there are multiple files that have to propogate out to the server. Should be working fine now but I will look into it.

Thanks,
Paul

I just let Software Installer update itself, then when it ran, it found some new updates, namely BIOS, DLA, RecordNow! and maybe a couple of others. I wasn't ready to upgrade these just yet, so I stopped at that point.

Sunday Morning April 2. Here is what I get from Toronto, Canada:

Start CommView.
Start Software Installer. Search starts and hangs.
Look at CommView.

Packets out to 204.146.30.17 (www-03.ahe.boulder.ibm.com) and packets in from 204.146.30.17.

SI apparently switches to 9.7.85.107 (no hostname). Packets go out, but zero packets come in.

In CommView, jump to SmartWhois. SmartWhois says 9.7.85.107 belongs to IBM in White Plains and that the host is *unreachable*

If I can provide further information, please let me know.

I KNOW I have a newer version of DLA than the summer 2005 one offered, so I wouldn't swallow any updates other than those you can verify are truly new. ;)

[edit]And I'm not trying to put pressure or blame on Strangethinker. I heard loud and clear that work is progressing on it.... 8)

I didn't check the version numbers of what was offered, since I wasn't planning to update anything just now. I was just mildly curious if they had any interesting updates.

Software Installer 3.50 is working today (that is, it is checking for new updates again). I see (from CommView) that 204.146.30.17 (ahe.boulder...) now points to 207.25.253.48 (download. boulder...) instead of the not-reachable 9.x.x.x address (at least outside of the US). Thanks. ... JD Hurst

Works OK for me too in Toronto, Canada.
A slight delay, but nothing major. Looks to be fixed.
