Access Connections @ T-Mobile hotspots

#1 Post by atekant » Thu Apr 06, 2006 12:07 pm

I am trying to use Access Connections to connect to the T-Mobile hotspots using the 802.11x encryption they have.

I see that Access Connections supports 802.11x, but there are numerous options, and I can't seem to get it right. Does anyone know the settings needed for it?

The T-Mo connection manager handles it automatically, so there are no settings to look at and copy from there (neither T-Mo support will help you other than saying you need their CM).

Thanks
Argun

I have used T-Mobile hotspots everyday, for four years. It works perfectly with every ThinkPad I have (see my signature below).

Access Connections does not work with T-Mobile (at least that's my experience after much trying and working with IBM tech support). The Tech support person even said that that access connections are buggy with Wifi.

The solution is:
1) Go to Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and remove Access Connections. (you can always put it back later, it's a download from IBM)

2) Then simply use Windows XP to manage your Wifi connection. Go to Control Panel / Network and Internet Connections / Wireless Network Setup Wizard. Follow the prompts.

I'm sure this will work for you. If you have any other questions or problems, let me know.

I do use the hotspots the way you suggest too, but only in open access mode. I want to use the 802.11x connection, which requires some software to negotiate the keys.
The t-mo connection manager does it automatically.
The AC seems to support 802.11x, but can't figure out the settings.

Using 802.11x is preferable to using an open connection for obvious reasons.

Yes AC does support 802.11x, however when I get tech support in Atlanta (IBM ThinkPad) they do not seem to be knowledgeable.
An example: After working with them when I was using my T43 (just recently) they said it must be a hardware problem and had me ship it to them. It was returned 3 days later with a "New System Board". That did not accomplish anything, still had the same problem.

In the past I have had expert tech support from IBM, this is the first time (after 6 calls) that I felt like they were untrained.
