SI > Sonic RecordNow > new version not installed
Today the Software Installer reported that a new version of Sonic RecordNow was available.
I clicked yes, downloaded it, and the SI removed the previous version (7.22) and did not install the new version (7.32). That is a problem because the new version release notes states that the update only works if there's a version installed already.
SI does does not list either the old or the new version, so I can't re-install the old version. This was one of my main tools to backup data to CD, and now I can't rollback to the old ver or install the new ver.
Tried running the executable that SI downloaded, rn732.exe. Install appears to start, even appears to nearly finish (as indicated by progress bar) but install dialog disappears and nothing in installed. (Small consolation, I still have the Sonic express labeler installed). But in Program Files\Sonic\RecordNow!\ there's nothing present, except a folder named "Update Manager" dated a few months ago.
Any log files or notes I can view to see what happened, or where can I locate old version to install?

Thanks for that tip. I was able to reinstall version 6.7.0, which was the original version.
rn732.exe is the guilty party here, not SI. Executing rn732.exe removes whatever version of RecordNow is installed on my system.
Unfortunately, I'm in limbo. I can't install the latest 7.32 version, and I can't locate an install package for the last known good version, which was 7.22 (I believe). 7.22 worked without issue, and I'd like to get back to it (anyone able to locate it on Lenovo's suport site?). SI only reports 7.32 available, 6.7.0 installed, but nothing in between (and I had a few versions in between).
The readme for 7.32 has a list of Supported devices, but the original part number for the CD-RW/DVD-ROM (part 13N6781, FRU 92P6581) shipped with my T41 does not match anything on that list. I'm not clear if that is the problem, or if the part numbers have changed over time or due to the IBM/Lenovo change. In any case, I don't think the install routine would just blindly remove the previous version, that seems to be the real problem here.

Re: SI > Sonic RecordNow > new version not installed
Despite the note, it does not rely on an existing installed version to install correctly. Something on your system is stopping it installing, which is probably why SI wasn't able to install it for you.XCoalMiner wrote:That is a problem because the new version release notes states that the update only works if there's a version installed already.

SI installed it fine for me on a T43 with an existing copy of v723 in place, and I have also done a manual install from the v732 .exe file on a T41 that had not previously had a copy of Record Now on it.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks for the insights. I got it installed after quite a bit of poking around.
Had to completely disable Microsoft AntiSpyware to finally get it to install. That was after seeing some messages in the event viewer that led me to enable two services (Universal Plug and Play Device Host, and SSDP). I also had the service Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine running, even though Spy Sweeper subscription expired 12 months ago. I don't think the Spy Sweeper service played into this, though.
UPnP and SSDP are disabled again after install. Also, rebooted since install to be sure everything works, and it does. This was not easy to troubleshoot.
BB, do you still have Express Labeler installed? I noticed when I installed the original RecNow version in C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\RecNow, Express Labeler remained (was not removed). But, after upgrading RecNow, I notice the shortcut to Express Labeler is removed from the Start menu, but the install directory still remains. Found the executable (stac.exe), and it runs fine, (it shows ver 2.1.0.28).

I installed the latest version of RecordNow! and DLA after restoring factory contents a week or so ago. I did not have the latest version before. Today I got a pop-up window for Sonic Update Manager to check for updates. When I did so, I got the BSOD. I rebooted and tried again. Again I got the BSOD. The error message was something like IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL.
After two of these BSOD, I uninstalled Sonic Update Manager using Windows Add or Remove Programs. I don't see where I really needed it anyway.

I like Sonic, use it for writing data backups to CDs. Its not flashy or gimmicky like the equivalent utilities geared to burning music CDs. I also got some new Update Manager thing today, but didn't pay attention to what it is, it did have Sonic as one of the two things it was looking for updates, so I just clicked Allow or OK.
I think Sonic Record Now has had two or three updates in the past two years. And IBM/Lenovo pushed them out via the Software Installed. But I don't think they will continure to do so forever, so I keep allowing Sonic RN (or the new thing today) to check for updates.
