T43p vs. T60

#1 Post by off1c3r » Wed Apr 19, 2006 6:18 pm

Hey

I have a T41, upgrading it as we speak and I wanted to get a new laptop for a while.. I am extremely stretched on a budget, and this will be my final laptop/computer/hardware purchase for a LONG time.

I originally wanted the T43p, and I was so excited when I Saw it in the 2.0ghz+ version with the FireGL3200, etc... but then I saw the T60 comes out so I was like wow thats pretty nice. Dual core and all, I was so excited.. but then I started to read more and more about the Lenovo venture and some cheaper materials used, and some nitpicking that people did, but I read all of it because little things bother me too. So far to sum up the T43 vs T60 in a few words, the T43 adheres to traditional IBM spec, with a New 2.whatever processor, new gfx, and solid performance while the T60 has a changed layout and style, can be noisey at times depending on the HD you choose, but has solid dual core performance and has a good gfx package.

Lenovo is having that sale until the 24th, and I wanted to take advantage of it.

I was stuck between the T60 200783U

and the T43p 2668G2U

In all honesty, I want that dual core laptop bad, but I dont want a cheaper experience with all the other parts... I'll take any opinions.. and also I know technically speaking, the T60 is superior for around the same price; I wont argue that, but its the little things that really make me happy with a laptop..

To add, I was under the impression that the GL3200 is better than the x300 in most respects... I hope this is the case (better in the fact I will be using the laptop to edit video, as well as play games)

The question is, is your current T41 able to handle everything that you need to do? If that is the case then I do not see the need to upgrade to a T43p or T60.

This sale is not going to be the last sale Lenovo is going to have. There will be other sale seasons.

So unless there is an absolute necesity for a new laptop I would not upgrade it. I want a X60 sooo bad, but then I think about it and my X24 can do everything that I need to do so I am not bothering with an X60.

For video editing... With the kind of money that you can spend on a laptop I would spend half as much and get more powerful computer with larger storage capacity desktop and 24" LCD.

Hey

The 41 is lacking very bad. I have a 1.6/512mb. I was upgrading the ram, but the video is lacking as well, it has a radeon 9000 32mb. I already have an editing computer, 3.4 TB and dual LCDS :P but I need a portable device because I travel outside country from time to time, and I can tote my storage with me (usb2.0/firewire ext. drives), but I need to keep the software I use for editing with me, (the places I go use different brands). So the T60 would be amazing with the dual core, but I don't want to be unhappy with it because I like the tradtitional style thinkpad.

I know what you mean about other sales.. I was just hoping to get rid of all my purchasing around now ... (had some extra cash and I was doing upgrades to everything) Sort of like my spring cleaning/upgrading etc... Just from what I hear though, it sounds like I would be annoyed with the T60 because of a certain cheapness to it?

If you are concerned about built quality of T60's , I would wait few months. It will be an opportunity to wait until a long term reviews are available by users in this forum. Most will have owned T4x series before having upgraded to T6x series so I expect a good comparative review by new owners.

If you feel that you can't wait, then you can always order a T60 since there is 30day return policy. Try it out for 4 weeks, and if you feel that the quality is not adequate you can always return and search an alternative.

I think that is one of the best features of IBM notebooks that allows you to go for a relatively long test drive before deciding to keep it.

BTW I envy your storage 3.4 TB!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice, I forgot about the 30 day trial, thats actually the best idea... I can test drive the t60.. see if I like it or not, and I can always send it back.. (i wonder what they do with the returns? :P ) ... In that case, I'll order the T60, and compare it to my T41, since the 41 would be similar build design to the 43 I was debating to get anyway (just with less power).

As for the storage, haha... now a days its a lot cheaper to do it. I remember when I first started getting external drives, they were so expensive... and now you can just build your own NAS and stuff. Now for the scary part, its 90% utalized.
