I have a T42 with the latest version of Access Connections, and I have no problem like you describe - missing lan adapter, and unable to change TCP/IP settings. There are a couple of things you could try. I am not a networking guru, but what I would attempt first is the following:

There used to be a peculiarity in Windows 2000 that you couldn't see all your Network connections unless some dial-up networking service was enabled and running. I'm not sure that applies to XP. But I'd be *REALLY* surprised if the AC upgrade had anything to do with this. I haven't seen it with upgrades from 3.71 - 3.82 - 4.0 - 4.01 - 4.11 - 4.12.

Now ... that's kinda a joke since I'm back on 3.82 on my work T41, as 4.x couldn't handle > 1 MAC address.

I've uninstlled and reinstalled several times but I keep seeing with this error intermittenly before I login to system. Anyone else seen this and more importantly found a fix?

I can't find SvcGuiHlpr.exe on my X60. Why do you think the error message is related to Access Connections?

I have that on my T42 and it is part of Access Connections 4.12. The file is located in C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\ . I also show this as a running process. I do not have any error messages associated with it though.

Ah. I unloaded 4.12 and went back to 3.82. That's why I don't have it.

I had exactly the same experience on my T-30. (2366-86U, XP Pro)
In addition, there was a conflict with the Thinkpad sound driver that caused the Sound driver to die at logoff/shutdown and require killing before I could shutdown. Reverting back to 3.71, re-importing profiles (and re-entering all the WiFi passkeys, sigh), and things are back to normal again.

I put off upgrading to AC 4.x for a long while because I had a fear that Lenovo would screw-up Access Connections. Looks like I was right.

The only specific feature that I was hoping to be able to take advantage of was the ability to support WWAN cards (I have a Kyocera KPC-650 EV-DO card for Verizon) but according to some other posts AC 4.x might not do much for me in that respect anyway.

Looks like I'm going to stick with 3.71 for a while longer. (I sure hope this isn't indicative of the quality of the rest of the updated "IBM" software utilities, which were one of the main reasons I have historically been a big fan of Thinkpads.)

Can anyone compare 3.71 to 3.82 ?

Were there any new problems when 3.82 came out ?

-erm... correction:

Things are not the same as they were. The laptop, while much better than it was when that ACC 4.12 malware was installed, still takes significantly longer (perhaps 30 seconds) to reach the point where the ACC icon appears in the system tray.

It isn't a huge problem strictly in terms of time, but it means that every time I bootup, I have to wait an additional ~30 seconds (compared to before I had installed/uninstalled ACC 4.12) before I can change to the desired profile I want, which is a pain.

I note that 4.12 appears to still be the current version of ACC - we can only hope that they are working hard at re-writing it to be as stable/reliable as the 3.x series. (hahaha, hope springs eternal.. )

I talked to someone at thinkpad help today, and was able to get the F5 function to work again so that I could turn on and off the wireless. I'll put the instructions below, but just a note that you do have to follow the instructions in order, otherwise it doesn't work (I tried).

I did find out that when AC can't find a wireless device (you'll know this if it asks you to turn on the wireless device even though the windows zero connection program is working), it is often because the function F5 is also not working. The wireless has to be usable with F5 before it can work in AC.

Before I list the F5 fix instructions, I also wanted some help with AC4.12. Without it installed, my wireless connection (using the windows zero config) is as stable as can be. When I installed the AC4.12, it shuts off the wireless every few minutes. It is not just dropping the wireless connection, but shutting the actual wireless device off entirely. I know this is problem with AC, and not the device nor my router. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have a fix? (My temporary fix was to obviously uninstall AC, but I would like to be able to use AC).

You must follow the order, otherwise it won't work.
Download, but do not install the following items from the Lenovo website (not intel).

Intel Driver
Hotkey Driver
ACPI Power management driver
Access connections

Follow these steps.
1. Using the control panel, uninstall access connections and intel wireless.
2. Reboot.
3. Install ACPI power management driver.
4. Reboot.
5. Install Hotkey driver.
6. Reboot.
7. Install Intel driver.
8. Reboot.
9. Test Fn+F5. You should now be able to toggle on and off the wireless device.
10. If #9 works, reinstall access connections.

Hope this helps someone.

I recently did pretty much the same thing by coincidence, and my T40 is working fine with AC 4.12 and the new Intel software and drivers from the Intel site.

I uninstalled AC and Intel prior to installing the new version of Intel drivers which fix a security hole (see thread elsewhere, IIRC in T4x Forum here). I also installed the new Hotkey software along the way.

After I was done, I removed the Intel programs from MSCONFIG, so that they would not startup. But I left the Intel Services running. I also have Windows Zero Service disabled, by the way.

The result - with new Intel software version 10 installed, new Intel drivers installed, and AC 4.12, is that it connects more quickly at startup that any previous setup.

Thanks for the previous message Ken. I was just curious which intel items you turned off with ms config. currently, the intel process i have showing are
intel proset/wireless event log (evteng.exe)
intel proset/wireless registry service (regsrvc.exe)
wireless management service (s24evmon.exe)
I read somewhere that this last service might be needed if you have the wireless and lan on at the same time (which occassionally I do if I am switching over to lan to do a big download). Does anyone know if this is true?

I just updated the driver only from the Intel site, and it is still a stable connection. I'll try to reinstall AC4.12 next and see if I can get it to remain stable.


Just a thought, I wonder if we could total uninstall the intel wireless software altogether in the control panel remove software. Has anyone done this? Is their any value to keeping this software if we are using AC?

The ones you mention are all Services and I've left those running (in fact stopping some of those supposedly causes slower startup).

Downloaded and installed new Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG driver v10.1.1.3API for my T43p. I soon found that this new driver is incompatible with Access Connections 3.82. With the new driver, AC is unable to make a wireless connection since it thinks the adapter is turned off even when it is on.

I have been using AC 3.82 instead of the 4.12 version due to the problems with applying profiles by recognizing known Ethernet connections and the other problem of VPN not being started by AC. Both of these features work correctly in AC 3.82.

As a result of the new Intel driver I have had to install AC 4.12 and live with these problems.

AC has been broken since the 4.x versions were released. I don't understand why Lenovo is taking so long to fix the problems in AC 4.x.

Has anyone found a way to fix the Ethernet detect and VPN problems in AC 4.12??

JWadle - I think your problem is the same one that I had. See if Function-F5 allows you to turn on and off the wireless device. If not, you need to do a reinstall (as I described just a few posts ahead). Once Function-F5 works, you can reinstall AC, and it will recognize the adapter.

According to the Lenovo help, it sounds like there has to be an order in which the items are installed, and updates have been messing that up. (Lenovo obviously needs to correct this in their system update order).

I'm not sure about the other issues you are having.

I just tried the system update thing, but all things went haywire so I just did a reinstall from the IBM partition , I'm stuck with AC 3.30 and version 8 og intel drivers on my X40. I've been using computers since C64 and I'm the PC-guy for my friends but really, I just gave up. It's just ****** up

Does anyone know how to uninstall the default Intel drivers which are there when you reinstall? There is no uninstall for them, and Lenovo says I should remove them before updating.

Too bad the new 10.1.1.3 API upgrade also breaks the wireless in different ways. Apart from the PEAP/MS-CHAT-v2 thing no longer working (highlighted in another thread), AC is also having problems with its own feature that is meant to allow you to override TCP/IP Settings - for wireless at least.

eg. If you have windows set to dynamic ip aassignment for that interface, and you have a profile in AC where you assign a static ip to the connection for a particular location, then it won't accept your override settings. Even if you are the administrator. This feature was working before the 10.1.1.3 upgrade on AC 4.12.

The easiest way is to go to Windows Add or Remove Programs (in Control Panel) and chose to uninstall: Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Software. That will launch the Intel PROSet uninstall utility. Just tell it to uninstall all the Wireless software. I happened to do this yesterday to upgrade the Intel Wireless software on my wifes T42 and it worked fine. When you reboot, cancel any Found Hardware Wizard then install the version of the software that you want.

EDIT: Alternatively, you can go to the following folder: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLANINT and run Setup.exe to uninstall the Intel wireless drivers and software. If you don't find that folder, try this one: C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\WLANCX2.

Just a little rambling:

Did a Reinstall. This time being very carefully, I downloaded all the various drivers in separate folders first. I don't remember if I uninstalled the old wlan drivers properly. Anyways I just decided to uninstall access connections altogether and upgrade the wlan drivers to the newest. And also a few other like small driver, power management driver and Active Protection, and also the normal ethernet pro/lan drivers. Everything else like the presentation director, fn+f5 etc I did not upgrade as it's working perfectly and I like looking at that IBM logo instead of just the red ThinkVantage logo. It's now working more or less fine. I'm feeling a little twitch to try out AC 4.12 , and I'm trying very hard to resist (I really don't "need" AC, it would just be fun to have it working when I'm doing the IBM fanboy thing infront of my friends with their ACER PC's hehe )

Thing is, I just bought a used x31 (i have x40 myself) for my sister, and the wireless card is only a bg2100, but every driver and other stuff were up to date and working including AC 4.12! Unbelievable!

This board is incredible. I searched for the problem I was having, and within five minutes I had the solution. Thanks!!

Am seriously considering removing AC 4.12 on my Z61m 94515CM.

Can anyone tell me the downfall of this if I primarily use dial-up (two different ISP's) or (in the near future) public wireless networks (will be travelling).

Personally I cannot see public wireless networks utilising some uncommon network / security protocols but I stand to be corrected (since I have no experience yet with public wireless networks).

Just an update.

Have removed AC 4.12 and it has improved stability. I have some software that has an internet datafeed (drip feeding) and on occasions it would loose connection when I was logging in into specific messageboards. After removing AC this is no longer happening - am a happy chappy about it!

Windows XP wireless configuration is not that hard and for a standalone environment it all seems a bit of overkill to have AC.
