Since the latest release of SI a have a problem. When I want to download an update or new software via SI it starts downloading and when it downlooads the file 100% it just starts all over again. And when it comes to 100% the second time it produces an error and say that it failed to download the package. Have tried rebooting and reinstalling the SI. Help appreciated.

I think that Lenovo has started to move towards using their new program to allow users to update their proprietry software.

It seems that they have updated the old System Update software and aptly named it System Update 2. It seems more polished now.

I have just started to use it and it seems fine. This iteration of it seems to be a more well-rounded program as it includes some nifty system administration extensions that will help SAs out. Stuff like package preparation and scheduling.

For people willing to try out what I think is Lenovo's new software to replace all of Software Installer, IBM Update and the old System update, you can check out the following webby. (The reason I say this is that there isn't any trace of the old software installer in all recent pages.)

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... U.html#DLP

So check it out.

Features:
ThinkVantage Technologies Active Update which allows your ThinkVantage Technologies to update on the fly.
Provides direct connection to Lenovo Service and Support or a local repository configured by IT administrator for available Lenovo drivers, software, and BIOS updates.
Automatically downloads and installs critical updates on a scheduled basis.
Helps you maximize your system performance and minimize security vulnerability.

Supports:
3000 C100, N100 notebook systems
3000 J100, J105 desktop systems
All ThinkCentre systems
ThinkPad A20m, A20p, A21e, A21m, A21p, A22e, A22m, A22p, A30, A30p, A31, A31p

It looks to me like this is geared more toward the corporate environment. Software Installer is probably better suited for the retail customers. Just my opinion.

Thank you for your answers it all cleared out for me when I saw System Update 2 on Lenovo's site. No trace of Software Installer anymore. Too bad, I quite liked the program.

It looks like you are partially right, and I am going to have to eat my words. This morning by chance I ran Software Installer, and it still showed the CSS update available (which I did not download).

After reading your post, I used a link I had bookmarked for Software Installer, and this is what I found:
IBM Personal Computing wrote:Software Installer is still available

Software installer will still be available for a limited time to allow you to transition to System Update 2.0.

I cannot download anything with Software Installer anymore. And here raises another question. I saw the update for Bluetooth with Enhanced Data on Lenovo's site but I cannot detect it by System Update 2. Thus making me unable to downloading it automatically... and making me feel that not all downloads will be available through System update 2.

Interesting. I just tried to install System Update 2.0 on my T21 and it gave me an error: "System Update could not find a supported .NET Framework"

I now have System Update 2 running. At the end, Software Installer told me I had Client Security to install (which I did not). Now System Update 2 tells me the Wireless NIC driver needs updating, but not Client Security. I do the Wireless NIC driver manually, so I downloaded it and installed it. It is working fine (alongside Access Connections 4.12) and all is well. Now System Update 2 tells me all is up-to-date. I'll check later to see if anything else is outstanding, but I don't think so. ... JD Hurst

You have to have .NET 1.1 installed, even if you have .NET 2.0. Go figure. Oddly enough, you can have both. You can get these from Windows Update. Launch Windows Update and choose Custom.

System Update 2 reported that I could install Rescue and Recovery and System Migration Assistant (both of which is true). CSS did not show up in System Update 2, although it did in Software Installer. I do not have CSS installed.

krma-thkpds, if you need the link do download specific drivers or software, I can probably find it for you. I would just need to know which model ThinkPad you have, i.e. T42, A21, 600X etc.

I am familiar with Lenovo web site and use it frequently for updating my computer so there is no need for you to search for those things for me. Thanks anyway. The problem is that in my opinion the purpose of System Update 2 is a bit lost if not all downloads are available through it. Where is the point in downloading System Update 2 if one still have to manually search through the Lenovo site for updates and software which is not offered where it should be?

I just discovered that while Software Installer is happy to run over the WiFi connecton in my hotel room, Software Update 2 is giving me a "Unable to connect to package content server" error message.

Not Happy!

Both Software Installer and System Update 2 work with my wireless Cingular EDGE connection (I know, this isn't the same as WiFi). I would suspect the router in the hotel has one of the ports blocked that you need. If you could figure out which port that is, perhaps you could get the hotel to reconfigure their router - that is if you will be staying there for a long enough time to make it worth their while.

EDIT: Bill, it just occurred to me that Lenovo might be making content available according to your IP address. I know Cingular pulls these kind of shenanigans. It might not be that likely, but it is a possibility.

So . . . I just downloaded and installed System Update 2, rebooted, and . . . can't find it! How do I run the thing?

 I just navigated to the Lenovo folder that it installed to and ran Tvsu.exe--of course, it fired right up. I guess I expected a desktop icon or something in the Start menu . . .

There should be a ThinkVantage folder and it is in there.

Rant ON: IBM keeps changing these folders. Turkeys, they are. I move everything into the old Access IBM folder. At least I know where everything is. Rant OFF.

There should be an icon in ThinkVantage folder.

I agree. When I installed System Update 2 an icon WAS put into the ThinkVantage folder.

Hi,

I tried to download updates (for the first time ever) with IBM Update Connector, but it says there was an error while downloading updates.

Then I installed the ThinkVantage System Update but it needs Update Connector to be uninstalled. It tried to uninstall it but with no success (error). Also, the Update Connector is not in the list of installed programmes in TP Software Installer...

Do you know any solution?

Thanks, David

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. See if you don't see Update Connector (or IBM Update Connector) there. You should be able to remove it from Add or Remove Programs.

no, it is not there but it is still "installed"

I removed Update Connector using Add or Remove Programs some time ago. I am not sure why you are having a problem. Reboot your computer. Try System Update again. Do you still get an IBM Update Connector error message? Note that just because there is still an icon, or you can find a program in All Programs, doesn't mean that the program is still installed. Occasionally icons get left behind after an uninstall.

EDIT: After trying the above, you might want to uninstall System Update, reboot, then reinstall System Update. Maybe this will fix your problem.

Yes, probably it is sorted out now. It doesn't have its own record in Add or Remove... but it was under Access IBM progs... Thanks for your help! :-)

I am going to install the new update programme.

I'd like to ask you, could you look at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=31076 it is a thread about some problems (questions) with thinkpad, I connected it with a model G40, but it is more general I think, ...

Thanks for your help!

I'm having problems with System Update 2 as well. In my case, I'm getting the "An error occured while gathering user information" as it's searching for update agents. I have no idea what it means and how it can be resolved.

I have e-mailed Lenovo a week ago, still no answer.

You can download all your drivers and software manually for your X31 from the following page. Software Installer is there as well - you might want to try it. Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad X30, X31, X32

Thanks :)

It's always good to know that there's the old school way to download the drivers. I have the drivers matrix site bookmarked the day I got my Thinkpad.

I was (still am) very happy with the Software Installer, I just like to upgrade software and utilities, just to stay up-to-date and benefit from the new features.

I will try to follow the advice uninstalling IE7 RC1, which was posted a while ago and it's supposed to work.

Did you install the Windows Update that fixes authentication issues with IE7? Launch Windows Update, choose Custom, then read through the available updates that come up.

Oh! Which one would that be? I normally get WinUpdate notifications automatically (manual install), but I don't know which one you are referring to..

OK, I'll check now.

Update:

I've found and installed the patch. System Update 2 is still not working.

There is yet another new version of Software Installer out as of today or yesterday. I am up-to-date, so it isn't finding anything that I use. It is finding SMA and Client Security (neither of which I use). It is still not clear to me that Lenovo is dumping this application (although I expected they might sometime). ... JD Hurst
